Solaris isn't really free, but anyway...  Linux comes with very good
software RAID.  I've found it incredibly stable, and blazingly fast.
There's a HOWTO, and a FAQ.  They're a bit old, but all of the configuration
information is still valid.  The 2.4.x kernels don't need patches.
linux-raid at vger.kernel.org is a good mailing list, if you decide to try it
out.  Some of the BSD's have RAID as well, but it's about as well done as
their package management system (half-way, at best). Later,
