Glad you recognise that London is more important than the surrounding
countryside :-)

My own opinion:
  Paris: nice in spring and autumn, lousy in summer (chock-full of
    tourists) and winter (cold, wet, generally crap)
  Nice: nice in autumn, too touristy in summer, nice for a winter break,
    not been in spring
  Venice: too touristy all the time.  Firenze is better anytime, but even
    so, avoid during summer

but then, my tastes are probably different.

So where would I go in summer?  Reykjavik, Edinburgh, Bergen, St. Petersburg.
Except that this summer, I'm going to San Jose hopefully, for Cal-Ex, and
then I'd like to skip across to the Canadian maritime provinces.
