According to 'The Emperor Wears No Clothes' by Jack Herer,
the reasons behind Cannibis prohibition in the US include:

- Paper manufacturers and Newspapers (Hearst) didn't want
   cheap hemp paper on the market.

- Oil companies didn't want hemp oil to be investigated as
   a renewable energy source.

- Pharmaceutical companies didn't want Cannibis looked at as
   a potential painkiller/remedy.
