Should only have to do that once a year or so, if you're backwashing 
often enough - and we only backwash once a month or so.

Sounds like:

1.  Using too much DE and its clogging
and/or
2.  Filter/pump isnt adequate for pool size

Seriously, I have to stop the pump and clean the leaves out of the strainer
basket at the intake in the pool, more often than I have to touch the pump and
filter - and thats only maybe twice a week (we have a tree over the pool.
ugh.)  the last couple of times we backwashed, it was "eh, might as well
while we're working on it".
