Shared Multi-Megabit Data Service.  You have an ISP or other IP
connectivity provider...they bring in a host circuit, most likely on a
45mbps DS3.  Your customers connect to the SMDS "cloud" via other
circuits...T1 or T3s.

Its packet switched like frame relay, but you don't create Permenant
Virtual Circuits like you do in frame relay.  Packets are given a
destination address and then the SMDS cloud routes them based on the best
path avaiable.
