Patch Name: PHNE_9081 Patch Description: s700_800 10.20 NetTL cumulative patch Creation Date: 96/01/17 Post Date: 97/01/30 Warning: 97/04/25 - This Non-Critical Warning has been issued by HP. This patch can cause formatted network trace information to be corrupt for some network subsystems, resulting in an inability to analyze network trace information. The captured trace information is valid, it simply cannot be formatted. Some of the subsystems known to be affected are X.25, ATM, and ISDN. The initial investigation by the NetTL lab shows that approximately 10 of 152 subsystems may be affected. The patch introduced two changes, one to support large user ids (UIDs) and one to support the year 2000. The large UID change caused the format incompatibility with the network subsystems. A new patch will be released as soon as possible that implements only the year 2000 fix. Patch PHNE_8164 will be re-released until the replacement patch is available. Patch PHNE_9081 should be removed from customer systems where network tracing of subystems is required. Network tracing is typically used as a debug tool, so many customers may not be affected in their daily business. If the patch is not proactively removed, it can be removed at the time when the network trace format failure occurs. The network trace information captured while PHNE_9081 is installed is valid and can be properly formatted and displayed after the patch is removed. Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.20 s800: 10.20 Products: N/A Filesets: Networking.NETTL-ADM Networking.NETTL-RUN Networking.NETTL-MIN Automatic Reboot?: No Status: General Superseded With Warnings Critical: No Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700_800/10.X/PHNE_9081 Symptoms: PHNE_9081: The end user will not be able to use NetTL for large number of users. This cummulative patch also fixes time and date problems. PHNE_8164: The user will see a core-dump when the SNMP sub- system is formatted using netfmt(1M). The typeof formatting used is "nice" formatting. The ntl_write() function had an effect of unblocking the blocked SIGCHLD signal. Defect Description: PHNE_9081: On investigation/review it was observed that the large UID change made during the 10.20 release had some inconsitancies. This patch also fixes date and time related problems.jj PHNE_8164: The core dump is seen when the user is uses the /usr/sbin/netfmt to format tracing and logging binary files beloging to the SNMP sub-system. The signal interfaces used in the nettl_write() was sigsetmask(), this is a non-standard interface. Whereas in the application, standard signal interface routines like sigaction(), sigprocmask(), are being used. This caused nettl_write() to unblock the previously blocked SIGCHLD signal. Back up your system before installing a patch. 2. Login as root. 3. Copy the patch to the /tmp directory. 4. Move to the /tmp directory and unshar the patch: cd /tmp sh PHNE_9081 5a. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch: swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \ -s /tmp/PHNE_9081.depot 5b. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHNE_9081.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c. For a heterogeneous NFS Diskless cluster: - run swinstall on the server as in step 5a to install the patch on the cluster server. - run swcluster on the server as in step 5b to install the patch on the cluster clients. By default swinstall will archive the original software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHNE_9081. If you do not wish to retain a copy of the original software, you can create an empty file named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE. Warning: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful when using this feature. It is recommended that you move the PHNE_9081.text file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference. To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the tape drive, use the command: dd if=/tmp/PHNE_9081.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k Special Installation Instructions: Execute the following command before installing this patch /usr/sbin/nettl -sp
