Patch Name: PHNE_14290 Patch Description: s700_800 10.20 Advanced Server/9000 (AS/U) B.03.0[01] patch Creation Date: 98/02/27 Post Date: 98/04/06 Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.20 s800: 10.20 Products: Advanced Server/9000 for HP-UX (AS/U) B.03.00 B.03.01 Filesets: ASU.ASU Automatic Reboot?: No Status: General Superseded Critical: Yes PHNE_14290: OTHER File locking problems with shared files from Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95 clients. Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700_800/10.X/PHNE_14290 Symptoms: PHNE_14290: 1. SR 1653250886 If two clients using MicroSoft Word both try to concurrently use the same document residing on an ASU/9000 server, the second client attempting to open the document will fail if it is a Windows for Workgroups or Windows 95 client. A "sharing violation"/"file in use"/or other less specific error is reported by the client. We have also seen this behavior with shared Excel spreadsheets and Lotus Notes Organizer schedule files. NOTE: If BOTH clients involved in the 'collision' are NON-NT clients, then all subsequent attempts to open the file by NON-NT clients will fail, even though the original clients have exited the application which had the file open. Windows-NT clients will not be affected, and will still be able to open the file. Defect Description: PHNE_14290: 1. SR 1653250886 With the inclusion of large file support at Dart 37 (February 1998 Application Release), a number of SMB handling routines were changed to handle 64 bit offsets. Unfortunately, in one case this change has led to a file locking problem with certain applications run from 16 bit clients such as Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHNE_14290.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c.
