Patch Name: PHNE_12866 Patch Description: s700_800 10.30 sendmail(1m) v8.8.6 cumulative patch Creation Date: 97/11/07 Post Date: 97/11/13 Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.30 s800: 10.30 Products: N/A Filesets: InternetSrvcs.INETSVCS-RUN InternetSrvcs.INET-ENG-A-MAN Automatic Reboot?: No Status: General Release Critical: No Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700_800/10.X/PHNE_12866 Symptoms: PHNE_12866: 1. Have 8.X sendmail support hoststat and purgestat 2. Have sendmail patches contain what(1) strings 3. Previous sendmail patch installation might require /etc/nsswitch.conf file 4. Improve detection of sendmail already running in init.d/sendmail 5. Previous sendmail patch still has problems with UUCP rules and spaces 6. Sendmail 8.8.6 does not send mail to localdomain only, but to relay. 7. Sendmail:Remove info to send bugs to sendmail-bugs@sendmail.org. PHNE_11603: 1. Upgraded Sendmail(1M) to 8.8.6. 2. DL macro not functioning as stated. 3. killsm/sendmail does not parse ps correctly, may kill other procs. 4. Sendmail does not substitute real hostname for aliased recipient hostnames, if the alias length is equal to or shorter than the real name. 5. Sendmail causes NIS aliases to fail. 6. Sendmail ignores lines after "." when sent by dtmail. 7. In the absence of /etc/nsswitch.conf, sendmail does not use DNS MX records. 8. In the absence of /etc/nsswitch.conf, sendmail can't send external mails. 9. Sendmail won't deliver mail to file, wrongly thinks shell is bad. 10. killsm script (sendmail) didn't have a rval statement and sendmail script was printing duplicate messages which were already being printed by killsm script. 11. Sendmail has problems with DBM files. 12. Local site hiding and masquerading not functioning as stated. 13. ER: Have sendmail use /etc/nsswitch.conf rather than /etc/mail/service.switch. 14. Problem with Sendmail and UUCP. 15. Support the old functionality of DL macro in 8.8.6 sendmail. 16. Fix Interoperability problem of Sendmail-8.8.6 with Openmail. Defect Description: PHNE_12866: 1. Sendmail patches should contain hoststat and purgestat. 2. Sendmail binary should have patch name in the version output. 3. If /etc/nsswitch.conf is not present then the "hosts" and "aliases" entries should have default values that will match the value specified in switch(4). 4. The /usr/sbin/killsm script that is invoked by /sbin/init.d/sendmail to stop the sendmail daemon should detect whether sendmail is running in a more effective way. 5. The /usr/newconfig/etc/mail/sendmail.cf supplied along with the previous sendmail patch contains errors in ruleset 0. 6. The check_local ruleset in the supplied /etc/mail/sendmail.cf wrongly relayed mails destined for @ to the smarthost relay specified by the DS macro. The check_local ruleset also wrongly truncated @. to @. 7. /usr/share/lib/sendmail.hf supplied along with previous patch asks the user to mail bug reports to sendmail-bugs@sendmail.org. PHNE_11603: 1. Upgraded Sendmail(1M) to 8.8.6. 2. Due to an error in ruleset 99, mails destined for hosts in the domain specified by DL were'nt being delivered directly to the hosts as required by DL functionality. 3. killsm/sendmail start does not parse ps correctly, may kill other procs. 4. A bug in get_column function in util.c caused the truncation of the alias of a hostname. 5. When /etc/nsswitch.conf is not present on the system, the hostname lookup was using files by default. This was causing problems in a NIS environment. 6. A bug in collect function in collect.c caused ignoring of lines after "." when sent by dtmail. 7. When /etc/nsswitch.conf is not present on the system, the hostname lookup was using files by default. This was causing problems in a DNS environment. 8. When /etc/nsswitch.conf is not present on the system, the hostname lookup was using files by default. This was causing problems in a DNS or NIS environment. 9. A bug in chownsafe function (conf.c) caused failure of mail delivery to a file specified in the RHS of an alias or inside a .forward. 10. killsm script (sendmail) didn't have a rval statement and sendmail script was printing duplicate messages which were already being printed by killsm script. 11. addnis() function in makemap.c should be invoked only when -n option is set.Have makemap and sendmail use libdbm supplied in HP-UX rather than that of the public domain. 12. Rulesets correponding to site hiding/masquerading were commented out in sendmail.cf. 13. ER: Have sendmail use /etc/nsswitch.conf rather than /etc/service.switch for hostname and aliases lookup. 14. Error in ruleset 0 which was causing SMTP to be chosen as the delivery agent instead of UUCP for UUCP addresses. 15. DL macro has the functionality that all mails addressed to the domain specified by DL, should be delivered directly even if DS is set. In public domain version of 8.8.6, DL macro has a different meaning. This patch (PHNE_11603) retains the definition of DL as in public domain, including the functionality of DL as in previous versions using the Dm macro. 16. In Sendmail-8.8.6, in absence of the E mailer flag, the value for the mailerflag E of openmail mailer is "\r\n" by default, whereas Openmail requires it to be "\n". Patches: None Patch Package Size: 1670 KBytes Installation Instructions: Please review all instructions and the Hewlett-Packard SupportLine User Guide or your Hewlett-Packard support terms and conditions for precautions, scope of license, restrictions, and, limitation of liability and warranties, before installing this patch. ------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Back up your system before installing a patch. 2. Login as root. 3. Copy the patch to the /tmp directory. 4. Move to the /tmp directory and unshar the patch: cd /tmp sh PHNE_12866 5a. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch: swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \ -s /tmp/PHNE_12866.depot 5b. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHNE_12866.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c. For a heterogeneous NFS Diskless cluster: - run swinstall on the server as in step 5a to install the patch on the cluster server. - run swcluster on the server as in step 5b to install the patch on the cluster clients. By default swinstall will archive the original software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHNE_12866. If you do not wish to retain a copy of the original software, you can create an empty file named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE. Warning: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful when using this feature. It is recommended that you move the PHNE_12866.text file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference. To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the tape drive, use the command: dd if=/tmp/PHNE_12866.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k Special Installation Instructions: This patch installs sendmail-8.8.6 on HP-UX 10.30. This patch contains the implementation for an enhancement request for reading the switch configuration for sendmail from the /etc/nsswitch.conf file instead of from /etc/mail/service.switch. Hence this patch does not contain /usr/newconfig/etc/mail/service.switch and its man page /usr/share/man/man1m.Z/service.switch.1m. If /etc/nsswitch.conf is not present then sendmail uses the following switch configuration: hosts: dns nis files aliases: files nis This patch contains a fully documented sendmail.cf located at /usr/newconfig/etc/mail/sendmail.cf. This file contains anti-spamming rulesets that can be used to prevent unauthorized relaying access to the mail server. It is strongly recommended that this file be used as the base sendmail configuration with site-specific modifications as required. Note that PHNE_12866 does NOT install /etc/mail/sendmail.cf unlike the previous patch, PHNE_11603. The sendmail.cf supplied with the previous version of sendmail (8.7) is compatible with sendmail-8.8.6 installed by this patch except for interoperability with Openmail. See the WARNING below for details. Information on sendmail 8.8 is documented in the file /usr/share/doc/sendmail8-8_delta.txt. Please refer to this document for the new/changed features of sendmail-8.8.6. IMPORTANT WARNING: ================= 1. Installing this patch will have implications for Openmail due to the change in default end-of-string for all SMTP commands in sendmail-8.8.6. The default end-of-string for SMTP commands is \r\n for all delivery agents that speak SMTP in 8.8.6, whereas it was \n in previous version of sendmail. In order to make sendmail-8.8.6 interoperate with Openmail, please ensure you have the E=\n, in the mailer definition for Openmail in sendmail.cf as given below: Mopenmail, P=/opt/openmail/bin/unix.in, F=DFLMXmnu, E=\n, S=15, R=25, A=unix.in
