Patch Name: PHKL_7359 Patch Description: s700_800 10.10 fixes NFSD kernel regen/reboot problem Creation Date: 96/04/22 Post Date: 96/05/23 Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.10 s800: 10.10 Products: N/A Filesets: OS-Core.CORE-KRN Automatic Reboot?: No Status: General Release Critical: No Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700_800/10.X/PHKL_7359 Symptoms: PHKL_7359: There are two types of symptoms for this problem and the first varies depending on what is missing from the kernel: system Panic: B2352B HP-UX (B.10.20) #1: Tue Apr 9 03:19:31 PDT 1996 panic: (display==0xbf00, flags==0x0) all VFS_MOUNTROOTs \ failed: NEED DRIVERS The next symptom appears in an NFSD client's /etc/rc.log file after kernel software has been installed and the NFSD client is rebooted: Building a new kernel based on template file "/stand/system" Compiling /stand/build/conf.c... Loading the kernel... /usr/ccs/bin/ld: Unsatisfied symbols: ... (code) ... (date) *** Error exit code 1 Stop. config: make did an exit(1) config failure. ERROR: The kernel build failed. The system will remain booted on the present kernel. The cause of the failure must be determined, and a new kernel must be built. "/sbin/rc2.d/S120swconfig start" FAILED This failed kernel build can either cause the client not to boot or cause the client to continue to use an old kernel. Defect Description: PHKL_7359: After an swcluster install of kernel software on a 10.10 system completes on the NFSD server, the clients are powered on and a deferred kernel build occurs. This is executed by the /sbin/rc2.d/S120swconfig script, which eventually calls truncate_sys. truncate_sys causes all drivers which do not appear in the /usr/conf/master.d/core-hpux to be removed from the /stand/system file. This causes the dskless and other networking entries to be deleted from the /stand/system file. Consequently, mk_kernel fails to build the kernel because of unresolved symbols. The if_truncate routine should return false, so that truncate_sys is never called. if_truncate returns true because the /stand/kernrel file contains 10.00 instead of 10.10. This patch fixes the /stand/kernrel on a standalone or 800 server and fixes the /export/tftpboot/*/stand/kernrel when installed to the alternate root. Otherwise, the deferred kernel rebuild for all current and future clients will fail when the client is rebooted after installing kernel software. One workaround is for each client: cd /export/tftboot//stand mv vmunix.prev vmunix vi kernrel # replace 10.00 with 10.10 And reboot the client. The last line is what this patch fixes in addition to fixing the configure script which creates the /stand/kernrel for each new client that is added to the cluster. Back up your system before installing a patch. 2. Login as root. 3. Copy the patch to the /tmp directory. 4. Move to the /tmp directory and unshar the patch: cd /tmp sh PHKL_7359 5a. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch: swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \ -s /tmp/PHKL_7359.depot 5b. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHKL_7359.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c. For a heterogeneous NFS Diskless cluster: - run swinstall on the server as in step 5a to install the patch on the cluster server. - run swcluster on the server as in step 5b to install the patch on the cluster clients. The cluster clients must be shut down as described in step 5b. By default swinstall will archive the original software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHKL_7359. If you do not wish to retain a copy of the original software, you can create an empty file named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE. Warning: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful when using this feature. It is recommended that you move the PHKL_7359.text file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference. To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the tape drive, use the command: dd if=/tmp/PHKL_7359.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k Special Installation Instructions: None
