Patch Name: PHCO_14983 Patch Description: s700_800 10.01 Year 2000 NetInstall cumulative patch Creation Date: 98/04/27 Post Date: 98/05/15 Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.01 s800: 10.01 Products: N/A Filesets: HPUX-Install.BOOT-KRN-700 HPUX-Install.BOOT-SERV-HPPA Automatic Reboot?: No Status: General Release Critical: No Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700_800/10.X/PHCO_14983 Symptoms: PHCO_14983: At the year 2000, systems with HIL based clocks (most pre-B and C class series 700s) may see the time/date set totally wrong after rebooting from a cold install. PHCO_9648: At the year 2000, the instl_bootd services will no longer work correcty. Thus the ablity to do network boots from an install server will fail at this time without this patch. PHCO_8480: Fixed a defect in the installation of patch PHCO_8014. PHCO_8014: While doing a cold-install, the system may obtain the current date/time from the install filesystem and overwrite the system clock. This usually results in the system clock being set way back. Defect Description: PHCO_14983: Upon reboot from a kernel (in this case the INSTALL kernel) without the HIL patch (PHKL_10143), at the start of the year 2000, the time/date in the hardware clock will be munged. As the machine boots up again, the time and date will be completely wrong. This would only happen to pre B and Class machines with HIL based clocks. This defect is only seen AFTER rebooting from an unpatched kernel; the time initially is correct. ... This patch essentially combines PHCO_8480 and PHCO_9648, plus adds a new patched INSTALL kernel. Because of the new kernel, this patch only applies to release 10.01. PHCO_9648: Prior to HP-UX 10.20 the /etc/instl_boottab file used a two-digit date to hold the year. After the year 2000, this date would move to 3 digits, and the parser for this file would no longer work correctly. This patch contains a new instl_bootd that uses a 4 digit field for the year. PHCO_8480: This patch fixes an installation problem that the superseded path PHCO_8014 had. PHCO_8014 would fail to verify that it was applied correctly. It is otherwise identical to PHCO_8014 PHCO_8014: The default action of the HP-UX kernel is to pickup the date/time from the filesystem if it is over 1 year older than the system clock. This happens quite often when booting from an install server or media since the date that the install filesystem was created was when that version of HP-UX was released. Back up your system before installing a patch. 2. Login as root. 3. Copy the patch to the /tmp directory. 4. Move to the /tmp directory and unshar the patch: cd /tmp sh PHCO_14983 5a. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch: swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \ -s /tmp/PHCO_14983.depot 5b. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHCO_14983.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c. For a heterogeneous NFS Diskless cluster: - run swinstall on the server as in step 5a to install the patch on the cluster server. - run swcluster on the server as in step 5b to install the patch on the cluster clients. By default swinstall will archive the original software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHCO_14983. If you do not wish to retain a copy of the original software, you can create an empty file named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE. Warning: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful when using this feature. It is recommended that you move the PHCO_14983.text file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference. To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the tape drive, use the command: dd if=/tmp/PHCO_14983.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k Special Installation Instructions: None
