Patch Name: PHNE_18785 Patch Description: s700 10.24 (VVOS) STREAMS cumulative patch-includes XTI/TLI Creation Date: 99/06/08 Post Date: 99/06/17 Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.24 Products: N/A Filesets: Streams.STREAMS-RUN Streams.STREAMS-KRN Automatic Reboot?: Yes Status: General Release Critical: Yes PHNE_18785: HANG PHNE_16443: HANG Based on a portion of HP-UX PHNE_8492: PANIC Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700/10.X/PHNE_18785 Symptoms: PHNE_18785: Port of base patch PHNE_15202 to VVOS 10.24 Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_15202: Code that runs under UP emulation that interacts with the blockable scheduler (right now, tpiso) may not be properly protected. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_14505: When a uprintf is done within a system call, the return value can be corrupted. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_14187: 1. Change csq_cleanup panic to assert for panic reduction. 2. t_look does not return T_GODATA and T_GOEXDATA. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_13265: When linking with libnsl_s.a, an undefined symbol (t_ilook) is detected. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_12710: process hangs in close or poll or a panic due to memory corruption Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_12559: memory leak in XTI library Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_11898: hpstreams_option1 panics because of an uninitialized variable Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_10521: t_snd() reports incorrect number of bytes sent when in asynchronous mode (O_NONBLOCK is set) and TFLOW occurs. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_9059: When using high-speed networking it is possible to have the streams stack call back into itself multiple times. If the drivers and modules in use have a deep execution stack then the kernel stack size may be exceeded resulting in a panic. PHNE_16443: (VVOS) System performance may degrade under heavy load, when using Netscape NES 3.5.1 server. Based on a portion of hp-ux patch PHNE_8492. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_8492: In an MP environment where multiple streams are being built and torn down rapidly a panic can occur in the STREAMS code. Defect Description: PHNE_18785: Port of base patch PHNE_15202 to VVOS 10.24 Resolution: Port of base patch PHNE_15202 to VVOS 10.24 Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_15202: UP-emulated streams send their work to the UP scheduler. Modules/drivers that use the blockable scheuler send their work to the blockable scheduler. When a stream required both blocking and UP-emulation, there was an incompatability and the UP code could end up running concurrently on multiple processors. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_14505: uprintf ultimately calls hpstreams_option1, which resets u.u_rval1; however, no callers of this routine expect a return value to be set there. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_14187: 1. Eliminate unnecessary panic in csq_cleanup() as part of the panic reduction program. 2. t_snd() was not setting flag after TFLOW for t_look to flag that has been a TFLOW condition. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_13265: Due to a library compilation error, the symbol t_ilook is referenced but not defined. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_12710: Several problems are fixed here. A race between close and a service routine could hang a process. There was also a potential hang in poll due to a race. Finally, a mishandled list in osr_run could cause memory corruption. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_12559: The library allocates memory and does not free it. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_11898: Drivers calling uprintf could cause a panic under certain circumstances because of an uninitialized variable. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_10521: XTI and TLI applications may experience apparent data corruption. This occurs only when the application sends data using t_snd in asynchronous mode (O_NONBLOCK is set) and t_snd returns fewer bytes than passed, with t_errno set to TFLOW. In this case, the number of bytes reported to have been sent is incorrect. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_9059: This problem was found with drivers and modules that employ a very deep execution stack PHNE_16443: Repackaged part of HP-UX patch PHNE_8493 to fix inefficient usage of system memory, which may result in severe degradation of system performance. Based on HP-UX patch PHNE_8492: In a situation where a STREAM is being closed, there is a window where other STREAM activity taking place on behalf of a different user process can cause the machine to panic. PHNE_16443 Equivalent Patches: PHNE_18786: s800: 10.24 Patch Package Size: 980 KBytes Installation Instructions: Please review all instructions and the Hewlett-Packard SupportLine User Guide or your Hewlett-Packard support terms and conditions for precautions, scope of license, restrictions, and, limitation of liability and warranties, before installing this patch. ------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Back up your system before installing a patch. 2. Login as root. 3. Copy the patch to the /tmp directory. 4. Move to the /tmp directory and unshar the patch: cd /tmp sh PHNE_18785 5a. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch: swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \ -s /tmp/PHNE_18785.depot 5b. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHNE_18785.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c. For a heterogeneous NFS Diskless cluster: - run swinstall on the server as in step 5a to install the patch on the cluster server. - run swcluster on the server as in step 5b to install the patch on the cluster clients. By default swinstall will archive the original software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHNE_18785. If you do not wish to retain a copy of the original software, you can create an empty file named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE. Warning: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful when using this feature. It is recommended that you move the PHNE_18785.text file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference. To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the tape drive, use the command: dd if=/tmp/PHNE_18785.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k Special Installation Instructions: Please ensure that patch PHKL_18781 is installed before rebooting as it is a co-dependent patch of this one.
