Patch Name: PHKL_15952 Patch Description: s700 10.20 VxFS Quota/Attr. Fix For Panic During Log Replay Creation Date: 98/07/16 Post Date: 98/08/03 Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.20 Products: N/A Filesets: JournalFS.VXFS-BASE-KRN Automatic Reboot?: Yes Status: General Release Critical: Yes PHKL_15952: PANIC Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700/10.X/PHKL_15952 Symptoms: PHKL_15952: A data page fault panic occurs during the log replay stage of mounting an un-clean VxFS file system that uses attributes (e.g. OmniStorage File Systems). The stack trace might look like: panic+0x10 report_trap_or_int_and_panic+0xe8 trap+0xa48 $RDB_trap_patch+0x20 vx_mkcuttran+0x10 vx_fsetquotaupdate+0x50 vx_quotaupdate+0x8c vx_do_extfree+0x90 vx_extfree+0x3cc vx_qtrunc+0x100 vx_iremove+0x1cc vx_attr_iremove+0x150 vx_attr_inactive+0x254 vn_rele+0x1e8 vx_iput+0x20 vx_replay_lct+0xf0 vx_replay+0x27c vx_getfsi+0x1a4 vx_mount_getfsi+0x64 vx_domount+0xac vx_mount+0x2fc smount2+0x43c smount+0x10 syscall+0x1a4 $syscallrtn+0x0 Defect Description: PHKL_15952: The code dealing with quotas assumes that if attributes are being used in a file system, attribute information will be present in inodes that it handles. During log replay at mount time, however, inodes come directly from the log and do not have the inherited information. This causes a pointer to a NULL fileset structure to be passed to a function which causes a data page fault when fields in the NULL fileset structure are de-referenced. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch: swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \ -s /tmp/PHKL_15952.depot 5b. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHKL_15952.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c. For a heterogeneous NFS Diskless cluster: - run swinstall on the server as in step 5a to install the patch on the cluster server. - run swcluster on the server as in step 5b to install the patch on the cluster clients. By default swinstall will archive the original software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHKL_15952. If you do not wish to retain a copy of the original software, you can create an empty file named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE. Warning: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful when using this feature. It is recommended that you move the PHKL_15952.text file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference. To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the tape drive, use the command: dd if=/tmp/PHKL_15952.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k Special Installation Instructions: None
