Patch Name: PHCO_6826 Patch Description: s700 10.X diskcheck utility Creation Date: 96/02/27 Post Date: 96/03/01 Repost: 96/04/16 The patch was modified to allow installation on HP-UX 10.09, 10.10, and 10.20. Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 10.00 10.01 10.09 10.10 10.20 Products: N/A Filesets: OS-Core.UX-CORE Automatic Reboot?: No Status: Special Release Critical: No Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700/10.X/PHCO_6826 Symptoms: PHCO_6826: There are no external symptoms. This utility is intended to identify potentially defective C3324A/W (1GB) and C3325A/W (2GB) disk drive assemblies. Defect Description: PHCO_6826: Certain Single-Ended and Fast-Wide SCSI disk drives are experiencing failure rates which exceed Hewlett-Packards high quality standards. Workstations containing these disk drives may experience a failure caused by a build-up of deposits on the Read/Write Heads. This will, in turn, lead to a non-recoverable disk failure. The problem has been isolated to a specific range of disk drives from one vendor. These drives were distributed from January 1, 1995 through June 30, 1995. Although it remains unlikely that the majority of systems running these particular disk drives will experience this defect, Hewlett-Packard has decided to eliminate the possibility of failure by replacing these potentially defective assemblies in our installed systems. Back up your system before installing a patch. 2. Login as root. 3. Copy the patch to the /tmp directory. 4. Move to the /tmp directory and unshar the patch: cd /tmp sh PHCO_6826 5a. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the patch: swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \ -s /tmp/PHCO_6826.depot 5b. For a homogeneous NFS Diskless cluster run swcluster on the server to install the patch on the server and the clients: swcluster -i -b This will invoke swcluster in the interactive mode and force all clients to be shut down. WARNING: All cluster clients must be shut down prior to the patch installation. Installing the patch while the clients are booted is unsupported and can lead to serious problems. The swcluster command will invoke an swinstall session in which you must specify: alternate root path - default is /export/shared_root/OS_700 source depot path - /tmp/PHCO_6826.depot To complete the installation, select the patch by choosing "Actions -> Match What Target Has" and then "Actions -> Install" from the Menubar. 5c. For a heterogeneous NFS Diskless cluster: - run swinstall on the server as in step 5a to install the patch on the cluster server. - run swcluster on the server as in step 5b to install the patch on the cluster clients. The cluster clients must be shut down as described in step 5b. By default swinstall will archive the original software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHCO_6826. If you do not wish to retain a copy of the original software, you can create an empty file named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE. Warning: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful when using this feature. It is recommended that you move the PHCO_6826.text file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference. To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install from the tape drive, use the command: dd if=/tmp/PHCO_6826.depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k Special Installation Instructions: After installing the patch, perform the following steps: 1) Execute the diskcheck utility: /usr/contrib/bin/diskcheck You will see output similar to the following: REV 4.O February 2,1996 Peripheral SCSI ID SUPPLIER MODEL SERIAL NUMBER ========== ======= ======== ======== ============= Disk 2 TOSHIBA CD-ROM X CDROM mech Disk 5 SEAGATE ST31230N 00670569 Disk 4 HP C3324A US53107D3H Disk 6 HP C3325W US51806D4A Note any listings under the "MODEL" column for the model C3324/5 and record the SERIAL NUMBER(s) to be used in steps 2 and 3. *NOTE: Some HP Drives have a serial number beginning with MYxxxxxxxx, these drive were manufactured in Malaysia and are NOT involved in this program. As well, NO other HP drives are involved in this program. 2) If the serial number(s) obtained in Step 1 are US527xxxxx (where xxxxx equals anything) or LESS, this disk will be replaced by Hewlett Packard at no charge to you. Proceed to step 3. If the serial number(s) obtained in Steps 1 are US528xxxxx or GREATER, the drive does NOT require replacement under this program. 3) To schedule a service visit to replace any affected drive(s), please call in U.S. and Canada, 1-800-221-4191, between 9AM to 6PM EST. Outside North America, please contact your local support office. When calling, please reference the LYNX disk program and have your SYSTEM and DISK Serial Numbers ready. Shortly after placing the call you will be contacted by an HP Field Service Representative to schedule a service visit at a mutually agreeable time. In the unlikely event that you should experience a disk failure, it is recommended that you maintain a regular backup routine. This will also aid in restoring your data when the drive is replaced.
