Dear Caldera Customer, Support Level Supplement (SLS) ptf7430i addresses all the issues listed below. It is recommended that this SLS is installed on any system where the emergency_rec utilities are normally used. Please note that the changes listed below as being addressed in ptf7430b (including the new emergency_rec -o and -s options) are already present in UnixWare 7.1.1, but not in UnixWare 7.1.0. SLS ptf7430b addressed these issues: 1. A problem with emergency_rec(1M) existed, where the restore option on the Emergency Recovery Menu failed with a message saying there was an error setting up the disk: Encountered an error while setting up the disk. Press ENTER to continue. 2. An attempt to back up the entire primary disk using the command "/sbin/emergency_rec -e tape_drive" would fail to open /dev/rdsk/p0 and terminate with the message: Creation of the Emergency Recovery tape was NOT successful. 3. A fix is included that allows different block sizes to be used on different filesystem types. This was causing problems for the stand filesystem, particularly on some tape drives. Also, many tape drives do not support 64KB blocks. This problem has been addressed with two new options, -s and -o: - The first option (-s) uses 512-byte blocks which allows the user to override default blocking and make sure that all filesystems are saved out using 512-byte blocks. - The second option (-o) has been added to use a 512-byte block for /stand and then 32KB blocks for the other filesystems. Additionally, the scripts have been made to use a standard mechanism for controlling the tape and specifying drive parameters. Extra code has been put in to check the return values of this mechanism and report errors. 4. The layout of filesystems on the tape has also been changed. Now /stand will always appear as the first filesystem on the tape followed by / and then the others. This means that new emergency diskettes and a new tape _MUST_ be generated following installation of this patch. SLS ptf7430f addressed these issues: 5. A fixed tape block size tuner has been added. Tape devices can be configured via the /usr/lib/drf/tapeconfig file. There is a new question when using emergency_disk which asks for the device that will be used for emergency_rec. The device entered here is searched for in the tapeconfig file. If it is not found, or if no device is entered, the block size defaults to 512 bytes. 6. Under some circumstances, changing the block size parameter in the /usr/lib/drf/tapeconfig file (referred to above) was not taking effect. This parameter determines the physical block size used on the tape. The problem was especially noticeable in the performance of backup operations on DLT drives, which were taking much longer than expected. SLS ptf7430f addressed this issue. It is recommended that the block size parameter be increased to the maximum value supported by the tape drive. This value can either be obtained from the manufacturer or by trial and error. The allowable range for the parameter is 512 - 32768 when using emergency_rec without the -e option, and 512 - 4096 when used with the -e option. The default value is 512, but changing this to the maximum supported (for example, 4096 when using the -e option with certain DLT drives) can have a dramatic effect on performance. See the comments in /usr/lib/drf/tapeconfig for further details. SLS ptf7430g addressed the following issues: 7. emergency_rec was not working when the /var filesystem was on the second disk. 8. Emergency Recovery was not working for UDI. Note: The prototype UDI DPT driver used for testing emergency_rec showed some problems with the tape device. This issue is unresolved. If you are using emergency backup/restore, then it is recommended that the tape device be connected to a non-UDI HBA controller. SLS ptf7430h addresses the following issue: 9. SLS ptf7430g did not officially support UnixWare 7 Release 7.1.0; ptf7430h reinstates successful installation on this platform. SLS ptf7430i addresses the following issue: 10. SLS ptf7430i only supports UnixWare 7 Release 7.1.0. If your system is running any libraries or commands that are contained in this SLS, then these programs will continue to run with the old versions of these libraries or commands until the the system is rebooted. Note that when all necessary patches have been installed, it is recommended that you reboot the system at the earliest opportunity. This will ensure that no programs continue to run with the old libraries or commands. Installation Instructions ------------------------- 1. Download the ptf7430i.Z file to the /tmp directory on your machine. 2. As root, uncompress the file and add the SLS package to your system using these commands: $ su Password: # uncompress /tmp/ptf7430i.Z # pkgadd -d /tmp/ptf7430i # rm /tmp/ptf7430i Alternatively, this SLS package may be installed in quiet mode, that is, without displaying the release notes and asking for installation confirmation. To do this, use these commands: $ su Password: # uncompress /tmp/ptf7430i.Z # pkgadd -qd /tmp/ptf7430i all # rm /tmp/ptf7430i 3. There is no need to reboot the system after installing this package. The release notes displayed prior to installation can be found in: /var/sadm/pkg/ptf7430/install/ptf7430.txt Removal Instructions -------------------- 1. As root, remove the package using these commands: $ su Password: # pkgrm ptf7430 2. There is no need to reboot the system after removing this package. If you have questions regarding this SLS, or the product on which it is installed, please contact your software supplier.
