Getting Started

Java Development Kit 1.1.7A for SCO OpenServer systems

The Java Development Kit (JDK) for SCO Operating Systems TM is a powerful development environment that is portable, object-oriented, platform independent, and especially well-suited for developing Internet-enabled applications. The JDK includes the Java Virtual Machine, runtime classes, compiler, and basic tools for using Java.

The JDK 1.1.7A web download contains a number of fixes and performance improvements to the JDK 1.1.7 and includes a debuggable Virtual Machine.

System Requirements

Software: SCO OpenServerTM Release 5.0.2, 5.0.4 and 5.0.5 with the version 7.1.0 OSRcompat module installed (see below)
RAM: 32MB minimum; 64MB recommended
Disk Space: 52MB free disk space

Installation

Once you have downloaded the product file or files from the Download page, perform the following steps as root:

  1. Move the files to a preferred installation directory, for example:
    mv  P*.tar  /tmp2 or
    mv  C*.tar  /tmp2
  2. Change to the installation directory:
    cd  /tmp2
  3. Extract the files. This command must be performed on each file individually.
    tar  xvf  <filename>.tar
  4. Uncompress the files:
    uncompress  *.Z
  5. If the Version 7.1.0 UDK Compatibility Module for OpenServer is not already installed on your system, install it now. The 7.1.0 Compatibility Module can be downloaded from the following location:
    ftp://ftp.sco.com/udk/openserver5

NOTE: You must remove any previous OSRcompat module from your SCO OpenServer system before installing a newer version. To remove the older version, enter:

    pkgrm  OSRcompat.version_string_if_any

To confirm whether an OSRcompat module has been installed on your system, enter:

    pkginfo  |  grep  OSRcompat
  6. Install the JDK files in the following order:
    pkgadd  -d  /tmp2/jdk117.ds
    pkgadd  -d  /tmp2/jdk117pls.ds
  7. When you have completed the installation, you will probably want to remove the download packages from the /tmp2 directory, as they are rather large.
