    Java Development KitTM 1.1.8_005 for SCO® Operating Systems

The Java Development KitTM (JDKTM), Release 1.1.8_005 for SCO Operating Systems, hereafter referred to as "JDK 1.1.8 for SCO", is a full implementation of the Sun MicrosystemsTM Java Development Kit 1.1.8_005.

JDK 1.1.8 for SCO has the same functionality as the Sun baseline JDK 1.1.8_005 release and enables SCO OEMs, ISVs, and end users to develop and run applets and applications that conform to the JavaTM 1.1.x Core API.

In addition, JDK 1.1.8 for SCO contains additional fixes and internal enhancements due to the Sun SolarisTM based JDK 1.1.3A and 1.1.3D releases.

Supported Platforms

The JDK 1.1.8 for SCO product will run on the following versions of SCO operating system platforms, with the indicated provisos:

Packages

The JDK 1.1.8 for SCO is distributed in the following packages:

jdk118 16.2 MB Includes the essential execution engine of Java, some Java development tools and additional components to support distributed applications and database access.
jdk118pls 48.4 MB Contains demos, debugging versions (_g-suffixed) of many of the commands and libraries and Sun documentation. (This package is optional.)

Installation

The JDK 1.1.8 for SCO is available on the download page as two compressed datastream images, each containing one of the packages listed above. Once you have downloaded the image(s) to a preferred installation directory, perform the following steps as root:

  1. Change to the installation directory and uncompress the files:
    cd  /Tmp
    uncompress  jdk118*.Z
  2. If you are installing the JDK on OpenServer 5, you should first determine if you have the UDK Compatibility Module for OpenServer (package name OSRcompat), version 7.1.1, already installed on your system. To do this, enter:
    pkginfo -l OSRcompat
    If there is no OSRcompat package installed, or you have an older version, you need to get it from either the 7.1.1 UDK CD-ROM (found in the SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.6 media kit) or from the SCO web download site at http://www.sco.com/download/. To remove an older version, enter:
    pkgrm OSRcompat
    To install a new compatibility module, enter:
    pkgadd -d /full_dir_path/OSRcompat

  3. On either UnixWare 7 or OpenServer, install the core JDK (be sure to use the full pathname):
    pkgadd  -d  /Tmp/jdk118.ds
  4. Install the JDK additional materials, if desired:
    pkgadd  -d  /Tmp/jdk118.ds
  5. When you you have completed the installation, you will probably want to remove the download packages from the installation directory, as they are rather large.
