SCO Doctor Release 2.0.0 Products for SCO OpenServer Release 5 Platforms

SCO Doctor^(TM), SCO Doctor for Networks^(TM), and SCO Agent for SCO Doctor provide a rich selection of systems management facilities, including proactive management with automatic corrective actions to prevent system problems before they cause degradation or failure. Additionally, automatic tuning ensures optimum performance for your specific load and configuration, and Automatic Alert Notification allows you to monitor system events and define corrective actions in response to alerts.
The SCO Doctor systems management platform is designed to address the wide spectrum of SCO UNIX^® system configurations in use today. Powered by an intelligent inference engine, SCO Doctor automatically monitors and manages your system to provide the best possible reliability and availability to users. Its intelligence reduces the level of human interaction required in systems management and extends the proactive systems management paradigm for local and remote machines.

System Requirements

All SCO Doctor products run on SCO OpenServer^(TM) Release 5 systems. The hardware requirements for each product are listed below:

SCO Doctor
CPU: a 386, 486, or pentium-class computer
RAM: minimum of 8MB of RAM; 16MB recommended
Disk Space: 5MB of free disk space
SCO Doctor for Networks
CPU: minimum of a 486/33Mhz, or a pentium-class computer
RAM: minimum of 12Mb of RAM; 16MB recommended
Disk Space: 15MB of free disk space
Modem: minimum of 9600 baud
SCO Agent for SCO Doctor
CPU: a 386, 486, or pentium-class computer
RAM: 8MB of RAM minimum
Disk Space: 5MB of free disk space
Modem: minimum of 9600 baud

Contents of the SCO Doctor Download File

There are several products and supplements provided in the download file:

SCO Doctor Release 2.0.0 products

The SCO Doctor, SCO Doctor for Networks, and SCO Agent for SCO Doctor products.

The installation images for this product are located in a subdirectory called scodoctor.

SCO Advanced Server SCOadmin Supplement

This supplement provides the functionality for adding client connection licenses on SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.0 systems. You should install this patch before installing any SCO Doctor products.

The installation images for this supplement are located in a subdirectory called oss414Ag.

Installation Dependencies

Please note the following installation dependencies:

SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.0 platforms
Install the SCO Advanced Server SCOadmin Supplement before installing any of the SCO Doctor products.
All SCO OpenServer Release 5 platforms
If you are using NIS to distribute password, group, hosts, and services files to client systems, you have to manually create some entries for SCO Doctor products on the server system. Once created and propagated to all relevant client systems, you can install the SCO Doctor product on the server and client systems.
NOTE:
- You can ignore Steps 1 and 3 for SCO Doctor.
- You can ignore Step 1 for SCO Doctor for Networks and SCO Agent if you are not using modems.
1. Create a user account (/etc/password entry) with the following fields:
```
Account name:      godoctor
Group:             godoctor
Login directory:   /
Account shell:     /usr/lib/doctor/bin/modem
User Id:           Any free value
```
2. Create a user group (/etc/group entry) with the following fields:
```
Group Name:        godoctor
Group Id:          Any free value
```
3. Create the TCP/IP service entries for agent or modemd by copying the following services entries to the /etc/services file. Copy the text exactly as it appears below:
```
agent              1643/tcp
modemd             1644/tcp
```

Downloading and Installing SCO Doctor Products

To download and install the SCO Doctor products or the SCO Advanced Server SCOadmin Supplement:

Depending on the speed and reliability of your Internet connection, you can select to download the SCO Doctor products as a complete tar file or as partial tar files.
- To download a complete tar file:
  1. Select the complete product (C0*.tar) file from the SCO Doctor Download page.
  2. As root, move the file to a preferred installation directory:
    
    mv C0*.tar /tmp1
  3. Change to the installation directory:
    
    cd /tmp1
  4. Extract the installation package files from the tar file:
    
    tar xvf C0*.tar
- To download partial tar files:
  1. Download all of the partial product (P*.tar) files from the SCO Doctor Download page.
  2. As root, move the files to a preferred installation directory:
    
    mv P*.tar /tmp1
  3. Change to the installation directory:
    
    cd /tmp1
  4. Extract the contents of the tar files. You must run the following command on each of the partial product files:
    
    tar xvf <filename>.tar
As root, start the Software Manager in one of the following ways:
- Double-click on the Software Manager icon in the System Administration window on the Desktop.
- Start the SCOadmin launcher by entering scoadmin on the command line, then select Software Manager.
- Enter scoadmin software manager on the command line.
Select Install New from the Software menu.

NOTE: If you want to install the SCO Advanced Server SCOadmin Supplement on an SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.0 system, select Patch Management and then the Apply Patch option from the Software menu.
Select the host that contains the installation images that you downloaded.
Select ``Media Images'' as your media device and press Continue.
Enter the full path to the installation images that you downloaded. For example, to install SCO Doctor for Networks, enter:

/tmp1/scodoctor

To install the SCO Advanced Server SCOadmin Supplement, enter:

/tmp1/oss414Ag

NOTE: See ``Contents of the SCO Doctor Download File'' for the names of the subdirectories in which the installation images for the SCO Doctor products and the SCO Advanced Server SCOadmin Supplement are stored.
Highlight the desired SCO Doctor product or patch then select either Full for a full installation or Partial for a partial installation.
If you are installing an SCO Doctor product, you are prompted for a product license.
If you do not have a permanent license, you can use one of the following 60-day evaluation licenses:
- SCO Doctor evaluation license

Click on License. For information on product licensing and using the SCOadmin License Manager, see the SCO OpenServer Handbook.
When the installation is complete, select Exit from the Host menu.
To configure SCO Doctor, start the program in one of the following ways:
- Double-click on the SCO Doctor icon in the System Administration window on the Desktop. (No icon is provided when you install SCO Agent.)
- Enter scoadmin sco doctor in a scoterm window.
- Enter doctor on the command line.
An Installation Wizard is invoked when you first run doctor, to help guide you through the SCO Doctor configuration. You can press <Esc> or select cancel at any time if you want to exit the Wizard. You can return to the Wizard at any time to complete the configuration process by selecting Installation Wizard from the Help menu.

After installing an SCO Doctor product, you should refer to the SCO Doctor Release and Installation Notes, which are available from the SCOhelp documentation system. Alternatively, you can view this document from the SCO Doctor Download page by clicking on the Release Notes link.

Licensing

Please remember that the evaluation licenses are good for sixty (60) days from the date of installation. Should you wish to use the product beyond the sixty day period, you can purchase a permanent Certificate of License and Authenticity (COLA) from your SCO Authorized Reseller.

Evaluation licenses cannot be reused; removing a product installed with a particular license and attempting to use that license for the installation of another product will fail.
