Getting Started

SCO Merge 5 for SCO OpenServer Release 5

SCO Merge(TM) brings support for Windows and DOS applications on the SCO OpenServer(TM) system. Windows 95, Windows 98, and DOS applications run simultaneously with business-critical UNIX applications. A common filesystem on the UNIX server allows Windows, DOS, and UNIX users to share data. VNET (Network Neighborhood) networking allows point and click resource sharing with other Merge or native Windows systems. Windows, DOS, and UNIX System users on the host system simultaneously share standard PC peripherals.

Installation Notes

Before beginning the installation, review the SCO Merge Release and Installation Notes , which contain known limitations and other important information. In particular, if you are upgrading, be sure to follow the instructions for removing the previous release of Merge prior to installing Merge 5

Downloading and Preparing for Installation

SCO Merge is downloaded as a complete cpio archive. To download and prepare to install the complete cpio archive:

  1. Select the complete product ( 500b.custom.cpio) file from the SCO Merge Download page.

  2. As root, either
    1. move the file to a preferred installation directory:
    2. mv 500b.custom.cpio /tmp
    3. change to the directory
    4. cd /tmp
    5. and to prevent problems with files that may have been left in the directory from a previous installation of SCO software first remove any VOL.* files already in the directory:

    6. rm VOL.*
    or

    1. make a new directory
    2. mkdir -p /tmp/isl_sw/merge5
    3. move the file to the new directory:
    4. mv 500b.custom.cpio /tmp/isl_sw/merge5
    5. change to the directory
    6. cd /tmp/isl_sw/merge5
  3. As root, extract the installation images from the cpio archive:

  4. cpio -icv -I 500b.custom.cpio
  5. The VOL.* files are now ready for reference by custom (the install from media images option).

Installation

NOTE : The Release and Installation Notes are extremely important and must be read before attempting to upgrade or install SCO Merge.

Once you have extracted the installation images from the downloaded cpio archive, install the Merge software and documentation using the SCOadmin Software Manager (custom):

  1. Double-click on the Software Manager icon in the System Administration window on the Desktop, or enter scoadmin software manager at a root prompt.

  2. Click on Software , then Install New .

  3. When prompted for a machine, select the system you will be installing from.

  4. When prompted for a media device, select Media Images .

  5. When prompted for the Media Images directory, enter the name of the directory containing the VOL.* files (for example, /tmp or /tmp/isl_sw ).

Licensing

During installation, you are prompted for a license. If you do not have a permanent license, refer to the release notes for a 60-day evaluation license.

Please remember that the evaluation licenses are valid for 60 (sixty) days from the date of installation of the particular product. Should you wish to use the product beyond the 60-day period, please purchase a permanent Certificate of License and Authenticity (COLA) from your SCO Authorized Reseller, and install that license with the License Manager.

Evaluation license numbers cannot be reused; removing a product installed with a particular license number and attempting to use that number for the installation of another product will not be successful.

Do not attempt to remove the evaluation license with the License Manager after it is installed. Doing so will cause that license to be invalid should it be used in a subsequent installation.

Desktop Merge is a 2 session license, while Server Merge is a 5 session license. Additional users (sessions) may be enabled in increments of 10 or 25 users through purchase of additional licenses.
