Dear SCO Customer, The enclosed Support Level Supplement (SLS) PTF3260, for use during installation of SCO UnixWare, provides a new version of disksetup(1M) which improves the speed of surface analysis on some SCSI disk drives. Installation on these disk drives would otherwise take an inordinate length of time, potentially many hours. On all other disk drives it will make no discernable difference to the speed of installation. NOTE: PTF3260 is purely an installation enhancement. In particular, it does not update the version of disksetup(1M) that is copied to the root disk during installation. To get the same disksetup(1M) functionality post-installation, it is necessary to install SLS PTF3209, the Emergency Recovery Disk Update, which also provides a number of other essential enhancements. Software Notes and Recommendations ---------------------------------- SLS PTF3260 should only be installed on: SCO UnixWare Application Server Release 2.1.0, 2.1.1, 2.1.2 SCO UnixWare Personal Edition Release 2.1.0, 2.1.1, 2.1.2 Installation Instructions ------------------------- 1. Become root and create a new directory by typing the following: $ su Password: # mkdir /tmp/pkg # chmod 700 /tmp/pkg # cd /tmp/pkg 2. Download the ptf3260.patch.dd.Z file to the newly created /tmp/pkg directory on your machine. 3. Uncompress the file, and make a floppy diskette image of it. This can then be used during installation on any other machine where surface analysis would take an inordinate length of time. # uncompress /tmp/pkg/ptf3260.patch.dd.Z # dd if=ptf3260.patch.dd of=/dev/dsk/f0t 4. Begin installation on the target machine, and proceed normally until the screen inviting you to "Install Host Bus Adapter Drivers" is displayed. At this point switch to the virtual terminal by holding down the ALT key and pressing the SYSREQ key, then releasing both of these and pressing the H key. 5. At the VT0 prompt, enter the 'patch' command. VT0> patch The system responds: Please insert the patch-diskette in floppy drive now. Press ENTER when ready. 6. Remove the Installation Diskette, and insert the PTF3260 diskette created in step 3 above. Press the key. The system responds: Applying patch .... please wait 7. Some additional information about the patch is displayed, and after a few seconds the system prompts you as follows: The patch has been applied. Please remove diskette now. To return to installation type: ALT-SYSREQ F1 VT0> Return to the installation screen by holding down the ALT key and pressing the SYSREQ key, then releasing both of these and pressing the key marked F1. 8. Continue with installation in the normal manner. 9. When installation is complete, obtain and install PTF3209B to ensure that disksetup(1M) and other essential utilities are updated. Removal Instructions --------------------- Since SLS PTF3260 is simply an installation enhancement that does not update the actual installation in any way, removal is unnecessary. If you have questions regarding this SLS, or the product on which it is installed, please contact your software supplier. We appreciate your business. SCO Support Services
