The feature includes enhancements to network install-related files, as well as changes to the Application Installer to display a single set icon, rather than the icons for all of a sets' individual packages. Symptom -------- The Application Installer only displayed the icons for individual packages in a set; it could not handle the set as a single entity. Some of the network install commands likewise only dealt with packages, not sets. SOLUTION SPECIFICS ------------------ General Description. ------------------- The Application Installer is changed to handle sets as well as individual packages. So the user now sees a single set icon, rather than the icons for all of the individual packages in the set. Consequently, the user may then select to install one "set", rather than being forced to individually select a (sometimes large) group of packages. Some network install-related commands are changed to handle sets as well as packages. The pkglist command now lists packages and/or sets that reside on an install server. It also has a new -c option to allow the display of "categories" of packages, which includes the "set" category. (Other categories are "system", "graphics", etc.; see pkginfo(4) for details on categories.) Also changed is the network install-related in.inetinst daemon which lives on an install server. It recognizes a "SIP" package (or "set") and uses information in the SIP package to get all of the set's packages. New Features. ------------ Set installation is a new feature, and includes enhancements to the Application Installer and to some of the network install-related commands/files, as described above. Software Notes and Recommendations. ---------------------------------- This PTF should be installed on a UnixWare 2.02 system which has the following packages installed: Desktop Manager (desktop), Graphics Utilities (dtxt), Network Support Utilities (nsu), and Server Utilities (server). It is very important that the PTF be installed on client machines AND any network install servers. The /usr/sbin/in.inetinst file is of particular importance on the install server. The other files installed by this PTF deal with the client system(s). To take advantage of this new feature, the packages and/or sets on the install server must be set up correctly. The following guidelines should be followed on the install server: - The new /usr/sbin/in.inetinst file provided in this PTF must exist on the install server. - The set installation package (or SIP) and all the set's packages must exist in /var/spool/dist on the install server. "Loose" packages, that is, packages that are not meant to be included as part of a set, may also exist in /var/spool/dist. However, a SIP should NOT be present for such "loose" packages. - The format of the sets and packages must be the directory format, NOT the datastream format. - If the server will be used for initial network installation of a system, the datastream format of the "as" and/or "pe" set must exist in /var/spool/dist/rel_name/locale (as before), since installation from the install diskette uses the datastream version. If the sets and/or packages are not set up according to the new guidelines above, i.e. the install server is set up the "old way", everything still works as before. The Application Intaller does not make the sets visible; only packages are displayed. Likewise, pkglist displays only packages, not sets. Testing of the modified software contained in this package has been conducted only to the extent necessary to confirm that it resolves the problem(s) stated above ("Symptom"). Such testing consists of recreating the problem conditions and verifying that the problem no longer occurs. No other testing of this software has been done. Hardware Notes and Recommendations. ---------------------------------- This PTF is targeted for the i386, i486 and Pentium CPU's. Installation Instructions. ------------------------- This PTF should be installed on client systems AND systems used as network install servers. See the guidelines in the Software Notes and Recommendations section above. Since a new Application Installer is included in this PTF, if you use the Application Installer itself for installation, be sure to close and re-open it after the PTF is installed. This way, you'll get a new process using the new Application Installer.
