TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: ptf637 - Sendmail v8.6.10 DOCUMENT ID: TID300113 DOCUMENT REVISION: B DATE: 03Mar95 ALERT STATUS: Yellow INFORMATION TYPE: Symptom Solution README FOR: ptf637 PRODUCT and VERSION: UnixWare 1.1 ABSTRACT: This is a new version of ptf637 that contains v8.6.10 of the Berkely 'sendmail' program. This new version also corrects a problem that the old (v1.1) version's sendmail program had in reading it's mail queue. SYMPTOM NA SOLUTION Apply the ptf637 file. Installation Instructions: DATATYPE: datastream 1. Download the ptf637.Z and ptf637.txt files to the /tmp directory on your machine. 2. Read the release notes contained in this file and follow the instuctions to add the packages to your system. 3. Now become root, uncompress the file and add the package to your system using the following commands: $ su # uncompress /tmp/ptf637.Z # pkgadd -d /tmp/'ptf637' 'ptf637' Solution Specifics General Description ------------------- This is a new version of ptf637 that contains v8.6.10 of the Berkely 'sendmail' program. This new version also corrects a problem that the old (v1.1) version's sendmail program had in reading it's mail queue. These release notes acquaint you with the contents of the UnixWare PTF637 patch for UnixWare. This patch provides a newer version of the Berkeley 'sendmail' program (v8.6.10). The 'sendmail' program is a general purpose mail router. This patch also provides a new version of the 'rmail' program that works better with 'sendmail'. If the Network Information Service (NIS) from Update 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 is installed, a new 'mkalias' command is installed. The new 'mkalias' command can read the 'ndbm' format database files used to save aliases in the new 'sendmail'. This alows one central point of alias administration for NIS and 'sendmail'. New Features ------------ Mail delivered by 'sendmail' will now place the original sender's name in the 'From' field rather than 'smtp'. This was fixed by adding a new version of 'rmail' that accepts the name of the original sender as an option. Among the changes in the 'sendmail' program are: o Performance Enhancements o RFC 1123 Conditional Compliance o Extended SMTP Support (RFCs 1425, 1426, 1427) o Eight-Bit Clean o User Database o Improved BIND Support o Keyed Files o Multi-Word Classes and Macros in Classes o IDENT Protocol Support o Separate Envelope/Header Processing o Owner-List Propagates to Envelope o Command Line Flags (-B, -p, -X, -q) o New Configuration Line Types o New and Extended Configuration Options o New Mailer Definitions o New or Changed Pre-Defined Macros o New and Changed Classes o New Rewriting Tokens o Bigger Defaults o Different Default Tuning Parameters o Auto-Quoting in Addresses o Symbolic Names On Error Mailer o New Built-In Mailers o SMTP VRFY Doesn't Expand o Aliases Extended o Portability and Security Enhancements For more information on the new version of 'sendmail', see: Costales, Allman, and Rickert, _Sendmail_. O'Reilly & Associates. Nemeth, Snyder, and Seebass, _Unix System Administration Handbook_. Prentice-Hall. Carl-Mitchell and Quarterman, _Practical Internetworking with TCP/IP and UNIX_. Addison-Wesley. Hunt, _TCP/IP Network Administration_. O'Reilly & Associates. A new manual page for 'sendmail' is included in this package. The new manual page can be found using the Finger Tip Librarian, or in the file: /var/sadm/pkg/ptf637/install/sendmail.1m For a sample sendmail Version 8 configuration file, see: /var/sadm/pkg/ptf637/install/cs-exposed.cf Software Notes and Recommendations ---------------------------------- To install ptf637, the BSD Compatibility (bsdcompat) package must be present on the system. Hardware Notes and Recommendations ---------------------------------- None Installation instructions ------------------------- Place the diskette in the drive, and at the shell prompt type pkgadd -d diskette1 Or use the desktop installation procedure. If Update 1.1.2 or Update 1.1.3 is installed after ptf637, then ptf637 must be re-installed for the Network Information Service (NIS) to function properly. Troubleshooting --------------- The original UnixWare version of 'sendmail' used some SUN-style semantics in the configuration file (/etc/sendmail.cf). If, when running the new version of 'sendmail', you see messages of the form: /etc/sendmail.cf: line 273: replacement $3 out of bounds And line 273 looks something like: R$*<@$%y>$* $1<@$2.LOCAL>$3 user@ether V8 sendmail doesn't recognize the Sun "$%y" syntax, so as far as it is concerned, there is only a $1 and a $2 (but no $3) in this line. Read Rick McCarty's paper from the sendmail distribution on "Converting Standard Sun Config Files to Sendmail Version 8". for a full discussion of how to do this. The file is located in: /var/sadm/pkg/ptf637/install/converting.sun.configs Other sendmail documentation is available from the sendmail distribution. The sendmail distribution can be gotten by anonymous FTP from: FTP.CS.Berkeley.EDU in the directory: /ucb/sendmail
