TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: PTF627 - MCIS IBM Fast SCSI Driver DOCUMENT ID: TID300048 DOCUMENT REVISION: A DATE: 25JAN95 ALERT STATUS: Yellow INFORMATION TYPE: Symptom Solution README FOR: PTF627 PRODUCT and VERSION: UnixWare 1.1 ABSTRACT: The ptf627 file contains PTF627 - "MCIS Driver". This update, consists of a datastream package which enables the use of tape drives with Unixware on computers that have IBM's new Fast/Wide SCSI controller. This PTF also requires a replacement boot floppy #1 diskette available separately in the file boot1.tar. SYMPTOM Cannot install from or access tape devices on IBM systems using Fast/Wide SCSI controllers The new mcis driver provided by PTF627 fixes a problem where Unixware 1.1 was not recognizing tape drive on some IBM computer, such as the IBM PS/2 Models 85 and 95. The problem only occurs on those models that have IBM's new Fast/Wide SCSI controller. On some models, the Fast/Wide SCSI controller in on the main board; however, a Fast/Wide SCSI add-on card is also available from IBM. SOLUTION Download the ptf627, ptf627.txt, and boot1.tar files to the /tmp directory on your machine. Create an installable package from the file in this PTF. Install your system using the replacement for boot floppy #1, the original #2 and #3 diskettes from the red box. Once installation is complete, apply the package from this ptf as instructed below. DATATYPE: datastream NOTE: This PTF also requires creation of replacement boot floppy number one available separately ( boot1.tar). 1. Download the ptf627, ptf627.txt and boot1.tar files to the /tmp directory on your machine. 2. Read the release notes contained in this file. 3. Now become root, and add the package to your system using the following commands: $ su # pkgadd -d /tmp/ptf627 ptf627 Solution Specifics General Description PTF627 requires a replacement diskette be created for boot floppy number one (available separately as boot1.tar). Create the boot floppy, according to the instructions accompanying the file. Label it Boot diskette 1 of 3. It replaces the original boot diskette 1. The datastream file contained in this PTF provides a package (in pkgadd format). It replaces 1 file, /etc/conf/pack.d/mcis/Driver.o. After this file is replaced, the UnixWare operating system must be rebuilt and the system must be rebooted for the change to take effect. The section below, entitled "Software Notes and Recommendations", provides additional details. New Features. ------------ The new mcis driver provided by PTF627 fixes a problem where Unixware 1.1 was not recognizing tape drive on some IBM computer, such as the IBM PS/2 Models 85 and 95. The problem only occurs on those models that have IBM's new Fast/Wide SCSI controller. On some models, the Fast/Wide SCSI controller in on the main board; however, a Fast/Wide SCSI add-on card is also available from IBM. Software Notes and Recommendations. ---------------------------------- PTF627 consists of two distinct parts. The first part is the replacement for Boot Floppy 1 available separately from the boot1.tar file. Follow the instructions in the boot1.tar package to create a replacement diskette for boot floppy one. It replaces the original boot floppy 1 that is part of the complete UnixWare package. For Unixware systems that are about to be installed for the first time, simply substitute this new Boot Floppy 1 for the original Boot Floppy 1. It is necessary to do this if you plan on installing Unixware 1.1 from a tape drive. If you are not installing from the tape drive, you may still want use the replacment floppy. The second part is a package (in "pkgadd" format) contained in this PTF. It consists of a new mcis driver. The package should be installed after Unixware is installed (e.g., from tape or CD-ROM or floppy). To install the package: 1) Log into the system as root. 2) Insert the floppy (PTF627 floppy 2) into the floppy drive - for this example, we'll use the first drive, drive 0. 3) Type in the following command: pkgadd -d diskette1 You may then proceed by following the directions stated by the pkgadd command. When the package installation is complete, 1 system file will be replaced, /etc/conf/pack.d/mcis/Driver.o (the mcis driver). The driver will not take effect until the system is rebooted. You can easily reboot the system by remaining logged in as root and typing: init 6 After the driver takes effect, you will have use of your tape drive. Hardware Notes -------------- PTF627 is targeted for the i386 and i486 CPU's. More specifically, it is targeted for machines using IBM's Fast/Wide SCSI controller. The controller may be on the board, or it may be an add-on card. Installation Instructions. ------------------------- For instructions on installing PTF627, please follow the guidelines listed in the section above entitled "Software Notes And Recommendations". Troubleshooting. --------------- The success of PTF627 is measured in 2 stages. First, if you are installing UnixWare 1.1 from a tape drive using the hardware targeted by this PTF, UnixWare should be successful in accessing the tape drive and installing from it. Remember to substitute the new Boot Floppy 1 created from the replacement set, for the original Boot Floppy 1. After the 3rd boot floppy (Boot Floppy 3 of 3) is finished loading, you will be prompted for the means by which you want to install the UnixWare packages. Assuming the tape drive is properly installed and it does not conflict with any other hardware device you have installed (e.g., a networking card), one of the installation options you will be prompted for is a cartridge tape. The second stage by which the success of this PTF will be measured is when the package contained in PTF627 is installed (see Software Notes and Recommendations for installation instructions). After this package is installed, and the machine rebooted, you should be able to access your tape drive. To test the tape drive, place a cartridge tape in the tape drive, and place a file in you current directory - call it any_file. Then type in the command: ls any_file | cpio -oc >/dev/rmt/ctape1 If this command completes without an error, then PTF627 was successfully installed.
