TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: PTF607 - IPX support for Arcnet DOCUMENT ID: TID300038 DOCUMENT REVISION: B DATE: 25JAN95 ALERT STATUS: Yellow INFORMATION TYPE: Symptom Solution README FOR: PTF607 PRODUCT and VERSION: UnixWare 1.1 ABSTRACT: The ptf607 file contains PTF607 which provides Unixware 1.1 and later with support for Arcnet with IPX. A new /usr/sbin/npsd executable is provided, along with a necessary ipx driver. This update if for UnixWare 1.1 SYMPTOM Prior to this update UnixWare did not support Archnet with IPX SOLUTION Apply the ptf607 file. Installation Instructions: DATATYPE: datastream 1. Download the ptf607.Z and ptf607.txt files to the /tmp directory on your machine. 2. Read the release notes contained in this file. 3. Now become root, uncompress the file and add the package to your system using the following commands: $ su # uncompress /tmp/ptf607.Z # pkgadd -d /tmp/ptf607 ptf607 Solution Specifics General Description. These release notes acquaint you with the information for UnixWare PTF607 - "Arcnet Support". This update, consisting of a single 3.5 inch floppy diskette, enables Unixware 1.1 users to run IPX over Arcnet. To provide Arcnet support, PTF607 updates two files. The first is an IPX driver, /etc/conf/pack.d/ipxl/Driver.o The second is the executable, /usr/sbin/npsd The section below, entitled "Software Notes and Recommendations", provides details on initializing npsd for use with Arcnet. The example given will target users of the Datapoint product. New Features. PTF607 provides Unixware 1.1 and later with support for Arcnet with IPX. A new /usr/sbin/npsd executable is provided, along with a necessary ipx driver. Software Notes and Recommendations. To use ipx/spx with arcnet, the /usr/sbin/npsd binary must be started as follows: npsd -f novell_rx-net The npsd startup command requires the -f novell_rx-net argument, whereas the user connecting to the ethernet or token ring frames starts npsd without an argument. This initialization can be done automatically at boot time by modifying the file /etc/rc2.d/S27nuc. Change line 109 from: /usr/sbin/npsd -v >> $LOG 2>&1 To: /usr/sbin/npsd -f novell_rx-net -v >> $LOG 2>&1 If you are using the Datapoint Arcnet software, you must install 2 drivers, both of which are provided by Datapoint: 1) The Datapoint Arcnet rim driver, for the arcnet rim card. 2) arcpkt, for the defragmentation of the arcnet packets. After the Datapoint drivers get installed, their initialization routines are placed in the file /etc/rc2.d/S65ans. These need to be run before the NUC initialization routines, found in S27nuc. This can be accomplished by renaming the S27nuc file: mv /etc/rc2.d/S27nuc /etc/rc2.d/S66nuc As part of the PTF installation, the Unix operating system will be rebuilt, allowing the ipxl driver to become part of the Unix kernel. This and any driver that gets installed does not become a part of the operating system until the Unix kernel is rebuilt. Once the kernel is rebuilt (using the /etc/conf/bin/idbuild command) the machine must be rebooted for driver changes to take effect. This update is for Unixware version 1.1 and later. NOTE: This patch modifies same files as ptf102 and update 1.1.1 Hardware Notes and Recommendations. The PTF is targeted for the i386 and i486 CPU's. Installation Instructions. The PTF consists of 1 3.5 inch floppy. Insert the floppy into the drive and, while logged in as root, type pkgadd -d diskette1 and proceed with the instructions. Troubleshooting. PTF607 is successful if you succeed in communicating over arcnet connections with IPX.
