TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: PTF606 - Boot Update for IBM Thinkpad DOCUMENT ID: TID021516 DOCUMENT REVISION: C DATE: 25JAN95 ALERT STATUS: Yellow INFORMATION TYPE: Symptom Solution README FOR: PTF606 PRODUCT and VERSION: UnixWare 1.1 ABSTRACT: The ptf606 file contains PTF606 -"Boot Update for IBM Thinkpad" a replacement IHV HBA diskette image with updated drivers to allow installation on an IBM Thinkpad portable computer. This PTF also requires a replacement boot floppy #1 diskette available separately in the file boot1.tar. To use this patch, you must have a working UNIX machine. SYMPTOM Cannot install UnixWare v1.1 on IBM ThinkPad machine SOLUTION Download the ptf606.dd.Z, ptf606.txt and the boot1.tar file to the /tmp directory on your machine. Create a replacement IHV HBA diskette using the ptf606.dd.Z file. Install your system using the replacement for boot floppy #1 (boot1.tar), the original #2 and #3 diskettes from the red box. When prompted for the IHV HBA diskette use the replacement created from the ptf606.dd.Z image. Installation Instructions: DATATYPE: compressedimage To create a diskette from an IHV HBA disk image file included in this PTF, become superuser and format a 3.5 inch 1.44MB diskette using: $ su provide root password at Password: prompt place a 3.5 inch high density disk in the floppy drive # format -v /dev/rdsk/f03ht ( f13ht if it's the b: drive ) Now uncompress the file using: # uncompress ptf606.dd.Z Now dd the image onto the disk using: # dd if=/tmp/ptf606.dd of=/dev/dsk/f03ht bs=1024k note path to dd image may be different use f13ht of it's the b: drive Solution Specifics General Description. This update consists of two 3.5 inch boot floppies to enable loading of Unixware 1.1 onto an IBM Thinkpad. The two boot floppies are: 1) The standard "Boot Floppy 1" (Boot Floppy 1 of 3 - downloaded separately as boot1.tar ) 2) A new IHV/PTF606 floppy, to be loaded immediately after the first boot floppy, and after the system has been loaded. New Features. PTF606 resolves a problem where Unixware 1.1 could not be loaded onto an IBM Thinkpad 750C with a 2.88 MB floppy drive. It also resolves various problems with other IBM ThinkPad models as well such as the Model 300 and the Model 500. The floppy disk software driver has been corrected to detect media in all Thinkpad models. This PTF contains a disk image of a new IHV HBA diskette with drivers modified to allow installation on a IBM ThinkPad. This file, along with boot1.tar ( a replacement for "Boot Floppy 1" ) enable UnixWare 1.1 to be installed on an IBM ThinkPad. The IHV HBA floppy is loaded immediately after the Boot Floppy 1, and after the system has been loaded. Software Notes and Recommendations. This update is for Unixware version 1.1 and later. Note driver found in this package is also contained in update 1.1.2 Hardware Notes and Recommendations. The PTF is targeted specifically for the IBM Thinkpad 750C, containing a 2.88 MB floppy and for IBM ThinkPad Models that exhibit read errors when trying to install UnixWare 1.1 from the supplied boot floppies. Installation Instructions. Create two diskettes from disk images ( the first boot floppy #1 from boot1.tar, and the IHV HBA diskette created from the disk image in this file, ptf606.dd.Z ) The PTF consists of two 3.5 inch boot floppies. One of the floppies is labeled "Boot Floppy 1" (1 of 3). Substitute this boot floppy for the original "Boot floppy 1" in Unixware version 1.1. Place this first boot floppy into the floppy drive, boot the system, and follow instructions. When processing of the first boot floppy is complete, you will be prompted to load either the next boot floppy (Boot Floppy 2), or an IHV floppy. At this point, place the new IHV/PTF606 floppy into the floppy drive and press "Return", and continue to follow instructions. You may also have a need to load other IHV boot floppies as well. For example, if you have an Adaptec 1740 HBA configured in enhanced mode, you must install the IHV/HBA boot floppy. After the system is loaded, you will once again be prompted for all IHV floppies that were installed after Boot Floppy 1. Insert the IHV/PTF606 floppy into the floppy drive and press Return. Caveat. If you are installing UnixWare 1.1 on an IBM ThinkPad Model 300/500 it is required that you DISABLE the following items in the POWER SAVING MODES: Power Management Doze Mode Auto Hibernate These can be ENABLED again once you have successfully loaded UnixWare 1.1. In addition, you must perform the following commands (as "root") on an IBM ThinkPad 750C with the 2.88 MB floppy driver AFTER the system is installed: modadmin -U fd /etc/conf/bin/idtune FD_DOOR_SENSE 0 (this will prompt for a "yes/no" answer for verification). modadmin -l fd These steps may also be required for other ThinkPad models. They can be executed if a command fails to access the floppy drive in a normal fashion to determine if that is the cause of the problem. Troubleshooting. PTF606 is successful if you succeed in loading and processing all boot floppies.
