ABSTRACT:

This PTF contains updates to the UnixWare remote printing system. These
updates allow better processing of large numbers of remote print requests 
and better handling of BSD-style remote print requests by clients and 
servers.

SYMPTOM

Heavy BSD-style remote printing traffic from a client can hang its network
connection and make remote printing impossible

SOLUTION

Apply the ptf266 file.


Installation Instructions:  

DATATYPE: datastream

1.  Download the ptf266 and ptf266.txt files to the /tmp directory  
    on your machine.

2.  Read the release notes contained in this file and follow the
    instuctions to add the packages to your system.

3.  Now become root, and add the package to your system using the following
    commands:

        $ su
        # pkgadd -d /tmp/ptf266

Symptom
--------

Heavy BSD-style remote printing traffic from a client can hang its network
connection and make remote printing impossible until the operating system 
is restarted.  When in this state, output from the 'netstat -a' command 
will show sockets open to the printer in the 'CLOSE_WAIT' state.

Heavy traffic on S5-style connections may also leave remote
print jobs in the 'finished printing' state when they have
already been printed.  The jobs are never removed from the
print queue.

General Description.
-------------------

The updated 'lpNet' command in this PTF will better handle
large numbers of remote print requests.  This package should
be installed on all machines using remote printing, not just
the server.

The updated 'listen' daemon will properly sequence multiple
simultaneous requests.  The printing subsystem relies on
the 'listen' service for its networking.

Software Notes and Recommendations.
----------------------------------

This PTF can be installed on UnixWare 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2 and
1.1.3 systems.  The Network Support Utilities (nsu) package
must be present on the system to install ptf266.


Testing of the modified software contained in this package has been
conducted only to the extent necessary to confirm that it resolves the
problem(s) stated above ("Symptom").  Such testing consists of
recreating the problem conditions and verifying that the problem no 
longer occurs.  No other testing of this software has been done.
