TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: PTF135 - 3C507/3C5x9 Driver Update DOCUMENT ID: TID300021 DOCUMENT REVISION: B DATE: 25JAN95 ALERT STATUS: Yellow INFORMATION TYPE: Symptom Solution README FOR: PTF135 PRODUCT and VERSION: UnixWare 1.1 ABSTRACT: The ptf135 file contains PTF135 - 3C507/3C5x9 Driver Update. This patch contains updated drivers for the 3Com EtherLink 16 (3C507) and 3Com EtherLink III (3C5x9) network adaptor cards. The updated drivers resolve "intermittent loss of network connection" problems present in the currently installed versions. This patch should be installed on all UnixWare 1.1.1 systems which have the el16 (3C507) and/or el3 (3C5x9) Ethernet drivers installed. SYMPTOM Updated drivers resolve "intermittent loss of network connection" problems present in the currently installed drivers. Version 1.1 of this patch additionally corrects an error in the 3C507 driver that causes a system crash when the network adapter card has only 16K of on-board RAM. Version 1.2 also corrects an error in the 3C5x9 driver that causes a system crash when the Internet Utilities package is not installed. SOLUTION Apply the ptf135 file. Installation Instructions: DATATYPE: datastream 1. Download the ptf135.Z and the ptf135.txt files to the /tmp directory on your machine. 2. Read the release notes contained in this file. 3. Now become root, uncompress the file and add the package to your system using the following commands: $su #uncompress /tmp/ptf135.Z #pkgadd -d /tmp/ptf135 ptf135 Solution Specifics 1. General Description This patch contains updated drivers for the 3Com EtherLink 16 (3C507) and 3Com EtherLink III (3C5x9) network adaptor cards. The updated drivers resolve "intermittent loss of network connection" problems present in the currently installed versions. 2. New Features None 3. Software Notes and Recommendations This patch should be installed on all UnixWare 1.1.1 systems which have the el16 (3C507) and/or el3 (3C5x9) Ethernet drivers installed. This patch requires UnixWare Update 1.1.1 and either the el16 or el3 driver to be installed on the system. The package will NOT install if the required system configuration is not present. The drivers being replaced allow ambiguous specification of the Cable Type parameter (the same value is used for multiple cable types), while the new drivers require each cable type to be uniquely identified. As a result, the current cable type configuration data will be displayed (as it will be interpreted by the new drivers) prior to beginning installation. This information will NOT be correct in all cases and should be modified as appropriate to reflect the cable type attached to each board. NOTE: This patch requires update 1.1.1, is replaced by update 1.1.2 and modifies same files as ptf154 4. Hardware Notes and Recommendations None 5. Installation Instructions Depending on the format: If this PTF was delivered on a diskette, then (as "root") # pkgadd -d diskette1 should install this patch. Otherwise, if you have a file such as "ptf135" which is in a "stream" format, then (as "root") # pkgadd -d /ptf135 will work. After installing this patch, a system reboot will be need to rebuild the kernel and incorporate the updated drivers. 6. Troubleshooting If, after installing this patch, network problems are still encountered, the "netstat" command may be helpful in determining whether or not network connections are still active.
