Dear SCO Customer, Enclosed is Support Level Supplement (SLS) xnx150. This floppy contains a device driver for the following Qic-40/Qic-80 tape drives running with SCO XENIX 386MC Operating System Release 2.2.3, 2.3.1, or 2.3.2 or SCO XENIX 286MC Operating System Release 2.2.3, 2.3.2: Vendor Qic-40 Qic-80 ====== =================== Alloy APT-40/Q --- Archive --- XL3580 Mountain TD47-40 TD8000 Tecmar QT-40i --- Wangtek FAD 3500 3080P 3040P To install SLS xnx150, boot up your machine and enter System Maintenance mode. Put the driver diskette (SLS xnx150) in your floppy drive and type the following at a root prompt: /etc/install You will see the message: First Floppy? (y/n) Answer "y" and then enter . At the next menu you will see the options: 1. Qic40 40MB Internal drive 2. Qic80 80MB Internal drive Pick the option that is appropriate for the drive you are installing. Another menu will come up and you should pick option 1 to: Install a Tape Driver At the next menu, pick option 3 for: Install Qic-40/Qic-80 Tape Driver At the next menu, pick the appropriate option: 1. Available for floppy disk only 2. Drive select is installed for Floppy position 2 3. Drive select is installed for Floppy position 3 4. Drive select is installed for Floppy position 4 Pick the option that corresponds to the physical drive select jumper on your tape drive. For example, if you are configuring your tape drive as the second device on your floppy controller, you would need to put the physical drive select jumper on your tape drive on position 2 and then pick option "1" at the above menu. Next you will be asked: You must create a new kernel to effect the driver change you specified. Do you wish to create a new kernel now? (y/n) Answer "y" and then enter . You will then be asked: Do you want this kernel to boot by default? (y/n) Again, answer "y" and then enter . You will then be asked: Next Floppy? (y/n) Answer "n" and then enter . Finally, you will need to reboot your system to activate the new kernel. Type: /etc/haltsys to reboot your system. The two tape devices created with SLS xnx150 are: /dev/rctmini (this is the device you would actually write to and read from) /dev/xctmini (this is the control device used by the tape commands) The "tape" utility is also added with SLS xnx150 and gives you the ability to send commands to, and receive status from, the tape drive. The following tape commands are available: amount - reports amount of data in current or last transfer erase - erases and retensions the tape cartridge format - formats the tape cartridge getbb - prints out new bad blocks from the last write map - prints a map of bad blocks on the tape cartridge putbb - writes a new bad block table to tape reset - resets controller and tape drive, clearing error conditions reten - retensions tape cartridge to avoid slack tape conditions rewind - rewinds to the beginning of the tape cartridge status - produces four status outputs: status: this is a report of the current status of the drive; "no cartridge" or "beginning of tape" are typical status messages. soft errors: is the number of recoverable errors that occurred during the last tape operation. hard errors: is the number of unrecoverable errors that occurred during the last tape operation. These errors are caused by bad segments on the tape or hardware failures. underruns: is the number of times the tape drive had to stop and restart due to tape buffer underflows. Underruns are not an error indication, but indicate that the data transfer did not occur at the drive's maximum data transfer rate. An example of the tape command syntax is: tape status Be aware that Qic-40/Qic-80 tapes must be formatted for use with SCO XENIX. You should use the following command: tape format It is possible to use pre-formatted tapes with the Qic-40 drives, although no such thing exists presently for the Qic-80 drives. The tapes are referred to as "thetamat" mini-cartridges. With a pre-formatted tape, you do not need to do a "tape format". It is strongly recommended that you do a tape status command prior to issuing any other tape or backup (tar, cpio, backup) commands. This has proven to be an effective way to clear any conditions that may exist prior to the command being issued.
