Dear SCO Customer, The enclosed Support Level Supplement (SLS) PTF3259, provides sendmail Release 8.8.5, which resolves various security issues in sendmail referenced in CERT Advisory CA-97.05. This release of sendmail also resolves several issues which arose due to a problem with the default sendmail.cf file provided with SCO UnixWare Release 2.1.2, which in some cases would prevent the local delivery of mail received over the network. CERT Advisory CA-97.05 is available at the following URL: ftp://info.cert.org/pub/cert_advisories/CA-97.05.sendmail Software Notes and Recommendations ---------------------------------- SLS PTF3259 is intended for the following releases of SCO UnixWare: SCO UnixWare Application Server Release 2.1.2 SCO UnixWare Personal Edition Release 2.1.2 While this SLS may be installable on earlier releases, SCO only officially supports this SLS on the two releases mentioned here. The sendmail.cf file for this release of sendmail is /etc/sendmail.cf. The installation of this SLS will use the existing /etc/sendmail.cf file, or it will copy the file /etc/ucbmail/sendmail.cf to /etc/sendmail.cf If neither of these files exists, the installation process will install a new /etc/sendmail.cf usable by the Internet Manager provided in the Internet FastStart (ifs) set of UnixWare 2.1.2. Should the installation process use one of the existing sendmail.cf files, it will make a minor modification to correct a problem in the sendmail.cf which prevented the delivery of local mail. Prior to modification, copies of the pre-existing /etc/sendmail.cf and /etc/ucbmail/sendmail.cf will be made using the naming convention of .. For example, the file /etc/sendmail.cf would be copied to /etc/sendmail.cf.970702100602, the numerical value representing the date July 2, 1997, and the time 10:06:02. If needed, a default sendmail.cf file that works with the Internet Manager is provided in the file /usr/ucblib/sendmail.d/sendmail.cf. This release of sendmail also contains the m4(1) configuration files that are provided as part of the public sendmail source distribution. They are located in the directory /usr/ucblib/sendmail.d/cf. They are provided for your use in creating complex sendmail configurations, but are not supported by SCO. Installation Instructions ------------------------- 1. Become root and create a new directory by typing the following: $ su 2. Download the ptf3259.Z and the ptf3259.txt files to the directory /var/spool/pkg 3. Uncompress the file and add the package to your system using these commands: # uncompress /var/spool/pkg/ptf3259.Z # pkgadd -d /var/spool/pkg/ptf3259 sendmail will automatically start if the SLS is installed while in multiuser mode (run level 3), or when the system enters multiuser mode.
