EFFECTIVE DATE: April 23, 1999 ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION ALLOWED: YES SOFTPAQ UTILITY VERSION: 2.x SUPERSEDES: None DESCRIPTION: This Softpaq creates diskettes for Compaq Remote ROM Flash for OS/2 servers. The Compaq Remote ROM Flash Utility for OS/2 servers is divided into two components 1) Host Component 2) Client Component Host Component: This is usually installed in the adminstrator console. This component consists of six floppies. To install the host component 1) Insert the first floppy. 2) Type A: at the command prompt and press enter 3) Type INSTALL and follow instructions. Upon installation a folder named "RSRUOS2" will be created on the desktop which intern consists a folder named "RSRUHLP". Invoke RSRUHLP to see the user documentation of this utility. Client Component: This is installed on the computer where ROM flash has to occur. To install the client component 1) Insert the seventh floppy. 2) Type A: at the command prompt and press enter 3) Type INSTALL and follow instructions. Note: For local ROM Flash both host and client components must be installed on the same computer. ************************* Important Usage Notes: ************************* The servers listed above have been tested and are fully supported by the Compaq Remote ROM Flash Utility. Attempts to use the tool to update Smart and Smart2 Array controllers installed in unsupported servers should succeed by design, but this has not been verified for this release. The ROM family name of a system (i.e., E40 or P40) can be identified by looking on the Integrated Management Display (IMD), if present. If the server does not possess an IMD option, ROM name information can be obtained using the System Configuration utility or by watching the console during system boot. There are two technical obstacles that limit the supported servers list at this time. 1> The current release utilizes the System ID to correlate a ROM image with a server. Compaq ships several servers that possess like System IDs, but require different ROM images. This release of the utilty does not support such systems. The systems that belong in this category are the following: Compaq ProLiant 1200 (E35 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 1600 (E34 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 2500 (E24 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 2500 (E50 ROM) 2> Servers that utilize Compaq's Advanced Server Management Chipset (ASM) will not perform a deep power reboot when the flash process is initiated, and thus will not successfully flash system ROM's. An issue that causes this behavior has been isolated in the ROM BIOS and will be fixed in the maintenance release of the ROM's dated 12\30\98. Systems that have an earlier ROM date can use a modified flash procedure to perform system ROM flash. These systems can use the utility to setup the system partition for flash, but will need to be physically powered off and powered back on to initiate a successful flash process. The systems that belong in this category are as following: Compaq ProLiant 1600 (P08 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 1850R (P07 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 3000 (P09 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 6000 (P40 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 6500 (P11 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 5500 (P12 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 7000 (P43 ROM) Compaq ProLiant 800 (P18 ROM) To flash the above list of servers the following steps may be used. 1) Run the romflash.exe utility to set up the flash process. 2) For systems with ROM's dated before 12\30\98, they must be shutdown followed by a manual power off and power on. 3) The system will boot to the system partition and perform the specified flash. 4) After the flash completes the system will shutdown and boot up into OS/2. HOW TO USE: 1. Download the Softpaq to an empty directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is SP6183.EXE. 2. From that drive and directory, execute the Softpaq file: SP6183 [ENTER] The following files should be created: 1. QRST5.EXE 2. 128601._01 3. 128601._02 4. 128601._03 5. 128601._04 6. 128601._05 7. 128601._06 8. 128601._07 9. SP6183.TXT 3. Obtain 7 formatted 1.44-MB diskettes. 4. To create the diskettes, run QRST5 and follow the on-screen instructions. 5. After the diskettes are created, you may delete the downloaded file SP61834.EXE and the other files created on your hard drive if you wish. 6.
