SoftPaq NUMBER: SP4273 PART NUMBER: N/A FILE NAME: CONFIG.ENT TITLE: Fix Presario 1060 QuickRestore Lockup VERSION: 1.00 LANGUAGE: English CATEGORY: Portables/Software Solutions PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Presario 1060 notebook OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows 95 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: N/A EFFECTIVE DATE: Aug 7, 1997 ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION ALLOWED: Yes SOFTPAQ UTILITY VERSION: 2.x SUPERSEDES: N/A DESCRIPTION: Creates a diskette that fixes the lockup problem that can occur when running QuickRestore on a Presario 1060 notebook. When a user enters the Product Identification Number and presses Enter (or the Next button), the system locks up with the following error: "XMS Cache Problem. Registry services maybe inoperative this session. Not enough extended memory to run Windows. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory or restart your computer. Press any key..." The problem is caused by an incorrect line in the CONFIG.SYS file: "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS I=E800-EFFF" This update replaces the incorrect line with the following line: "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS" HOW TO USE: 1. Obtain a formatted 1.44-MB diskette. 2. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is an executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above. 3. From that drive and directory, execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be prompted to insert the formatted diskette in a drive to create the diskette. 4. After the diskette has been created, you may delete the SoftPaq file downloaded in step 2. 5. Insert the diskette into the A: drive and restart the computer, allowing it to boot from the diskette. A batch file will apply the update. 6. When the update is complete, remove the diskette and restart the computer again. Copyright 1997, Compaq Computer Corporation. All rights reserved.
