TITLE: HP Firmware Upgrade for Specific Seagate Cheetah 10K.6 SCSI Hard Drives VERSION: HPS4 Rev A DESCRIPTION: This firmware upgrade is specifically designed for the HP workstation versions of specific SCSI Hard Disk Drives. The following drive ID strings and firmware revision levels (visible in most drive inquiry tools) correspond to drives for which this upgrade is applicable: - (SEAGATE ST336607LW, HPS3) - (SEAGATE ST373307LW, HPS3) - (SEAGATE ST3146807LW, HPS3) It is not recommended to even attempt to apply it to drives other than those identified above. This firmware upgrade is compatible with the firmware download utility for Windows provided in SoftPaq SP24527 on the HP Workstations support website (see HOW TO USE instructions below). PURPOSE: Routine Release SOFTPAQ NUMBER: SP24510 SUPERSEDES: None EFFECTIVE DATE: June 4, 2003 CATEGORY: Storage SSM SUPPORTED: No PRODUCT TYPE(S): Workstations PRODUCT MODEL(S): hp workstation xw4000 hp workstation xw4100 hp workstation xw5000 hp workstation xw6000 hp workstation xw8000 OPERATING SYSTEM(S): OS Independent LANGUAGE(S): US English FIXES: - Fixes non-recognition of odd SCSI IDs jumpered at the connector on the same end of the drive as the power connector. Only even IDs (0, 2, 4, ...) work correctly before the upgrade if controlled using that connector. Drives are shipped by HP with the SCSI ID configured using jumpers on the connector at the opposite end of the drive, which works correctly even before the upgrade. This ID-jumper problem is platform-independent. - Fixes a problem with intermittent lockups when starting Windows XP on the hp workstation xw6000. PREREQUISITES: - Requires a firmware download utility (see HOW TO USE instructions below) HOW TO USE: NOTE: You will need to have Administrator permissions on the system in order to perform these instructions. System reboots will be involved. IMPORTANT: This firmware upgrade is not self-installing. You need to also have a firmware download utility that can load this firmware into the hard drive. One such utility is available in SoftPaq SP24527 located on the same website where this file was found. The procedure for downloading the firmware depends on the type of utility used. Detailed instructions are provided with the utility. However, please take note: - For Windows-based utilities, the firmware file can be placed on the system hard drive, even if that is the drive that is being upgraded. However, it is likely that you will need to reboot your system after the upgrade, in order for the Windows operating system to recognize the change in the hard drive. - For MS-DOS-based utilites, it will be necessary to copy the firmware file to a floppy disk. The utility itself will also create a separate boot floppy. Performing the upgrade will involve rebooting the system to DOS using the boot floppy, then inserting the floppy disk containing the firmware file at the appropriate point in the procedure. 1. Download the firmware upgrade SoftPaq to a temporary, empty directory on your hard drive. The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above. 2. Run the downloaded SoftPaq EXE file to unpack the firmware file. 3. If you have not already done so, download the appropriate firmware upgrade utility SoftPaq to a temporary, empty directory on your hard drive. A download utility will be provided in a separate SoftPaq on the same website as the firmware upgrade file SoftPaq. 4. Run the downloaded utility SoftPaq EXE file to unpack the utility. 5. Follow the instructions provided with the utility to accomplish the upgrade process, including any directions to reboot the system. 6. After a successful installation, the installation files and temporary directories may be deleted. Copyright (c) 2003 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
