ActiveUpdate Version 2.1 - March 2003 © 2003 Hewlett-Packard Computer Corporation. ActiveUpdate is an advanced, Web-based client application. It provides a direct connection to Hewlett-Packard for automatic notification and delivery of the latest software updates for a broad range of Hewlett-Packard systems including servers, desktops, notebooks, handheld PCs, and workstation models. ActiveUpdate 2.1 is enhanced to include additional support information and deliverables such as Product Change Notifications and Customer Advisories. This application is the latest update to the Hewlett-Packard Intelligent Manageability line of products. System Requirements : * Operating System – Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0 * Minimum Hardware – Pentium or higher recommended, 64MB of RAM or higher * Disk Space – 20MB for the ActiveUpdate software and 1GB for the local cache * Internet Connection – Internet connection required (direct or dialup) * Web Browser – Microsoft Explorer 5.5 or later Installation Instructions : The installation program installs the BackWeb client and the ActiveUpdate client as a component of the BackWeb client. Before you begin, make sure you are logged on with an account that has administrative privileges. 1. Double click on the ActiveUpdate2.1.EXE program. This begins the setup wizard. 2. At the Choose Destination Location dialog, select Next to accept the default directory or select Browse to install ActiveUpdate in a different directory. 3. Select Next to begin the installation. 4. Choose how you wish to connect (Direct or Modem) and select Next. 5. Choose a communication method (HTTP or HTTP via proxy). o If your network uses a proxy server, select HTTP via Proxy. If no proxy server is deployed in your local area network, select HTTP, then select Next. o If your proxy settings are configured in your browser, the ActiveUpdate installation automatically detects those settings. If ActiveUpdate does not detect them, manually input your proxy settings. o After clicking Next, type in a valid user name and password for proxy authentication, if required by your proxy server. 6. Select Finish. ActiveUpdate Registration : This section provides instructions on registering ActiveUpdate, creating a user profile, and selecting the language in which you want to receive content. 1. The welcome and registration dialog displays shortly after the ActiveUpdate client starts. Select OK in the welcome dialog to open the Compaq ActiveUpdate logon window. 2. Select "New User? Click here" at the bottom of the window if this is your first installation of ActiveUpdate 2.1 and you have not yet created a user profile in ActiveUpdate 2.1. 3. Fill in all the blanks in the User Details window, especially the fields that are indicated with red dots (required information), and select Continue to add a user. 4. Review your registration and select OK to finalize your registration. 5. Once you have completed the registration, the ActiveUpdate client opens, and you can begin subscribing to the specific models, operating systems, and management applications for the support packs and information you want to receive. Select Subscribe in the lower left corner of the screen to setup your subscription. Starting ActiveUpdate : As well as providing a user interface, ActiveUpdate also has a client engine that runs in the background. This engine enables you to receive content at any time regardless of whether the ActiveUpdate client user interface is running. When the client engine is running, an ActiveUpdate icon appears in the system tray on your Windows desktop. To start ActiveUpdate, do one of the following: * Double-click the ActiveUpdate icon on your desktop. This starts the ActiveUpdate client user interface and the ActiveUpdate client engine. * From the Windows Start Programs menu, click ActiveUpdate and then ActiveUpdate. This starts the ActiveUpdate client user interface and the ActiveUpdate client engine. * If the ActiveUpdate client engine is running, the ActiveUpdate icon displays in the system tray on your desktop. To view the ActiveUpdate user interface, you may double-click the ActiveUpdate tray icon or you may click the icon once and then on the menu that appears, click Start ActiveUpdate. Uninstall Instructions : 1. Close the ActiveUpdate client. Shutdown the ActiveUpdate service by right clicking on the target icon in the system tray then select "Shutdown ActiveUpdate" from the menu. 2. Click the Start button in your taskbar, select Settings, and and then select Control Panel. 3. In Control Panel, double click Add/Remove Programs. 4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, scroll down through the window until you see ActiveUpdate then highlight it. 5. Click the Add/Remove button. 6. Click Yes if you are sure you want to remove ActiveUpdate from your computer. 7. Wait for the uninstall process to complete and click Finished. 8. Close the Control Panel.
