SOFTPAQ NUMBER: SP16532 PART NUMBER: N/A FILE NAME: N/A TITLE: Armada Specific Models Intel SpeedStep Technology Applet for Windows VERSION: 1.30 Rev A LANGUAGE: US English CATEGORY: Operating System Enhancements DIVISIONS: Portables PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Compaq Armada E700 series Compaq Armada E500 series Compaq Armada M700 series Compaq Evo N400c series OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows 95 Microsoft Windows 98 Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Microsoft Windows 2000 Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: N/A PREREQUISITES: N/A EFFECTIVE DATE: May 21, 2001 ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION ALLOWED: Yes SOFTPAQ UTILITY VERSION: 4.0 SUPERSEDES: SP15531, SP15089, SP13490 DESCRIPTION: The Intel SpeedStep Technology Applet is a Windows program that allows an enabled CPU to operate in multiple performance states: Battery Optimized (low frequency) and Maximum Performance (high frequency). This applet will place an icon on the system tray to provide a visual indication of the CPU state. It will also allow the user to set/adjust the CPU state to their preference. Enhancements/Fixes: - Removes a dependency on specific MSR reads during initialization. - Signature files are provided for all the operating systems listed above except Windows NT 4.0. - The signature files, PRPC.CAT, include signatures for the localized support files (27 languages total). The Spanish Latin-American version has been removed as Microsoft does not support this language. - Removes previously added MSR reads. The v1.2 release added these reads to determine whether a system is capable of Intel SpeedStep technology transitions. These are removed because they bind specific releases of the Applet to processor families and limit the Applet's ability to work across multiple generations. The IST Applet will continue to rely on BIOS information to determine whether a given system is capable of Intel SpeedStep technology transitions. - Fixes the Japanese language context-sensitive help. When running on Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0, the symbols for copyright and trademark were displayed as unreadable characters. - Removes the context-sensitive help from the Intel Logo. It displayed a copyright of 1999. Since the copyright string is tied to the help files and they have not been updated since 1999, with the exception of Japanese, it was decided to remove the display of copyright dates. Copyright data is contained in the Properties of the IST Applet's binary files. - For Windows NT 4.0 systems only, this release fixes the reading of user BIOS preferences. Under certain conditions on Windows NT 4.0 systems, the Applet must wait for the driver to initialize before completing its own initialization process. An example of this condition is a fully installed network that requires DHCP to assign an IP address to the system. If the network card remains plugged in, but the network cable is removed, the DHCP service takes a very long time to time-out. While the DHCP service waits to time-out, other drivers are not loaded by the OS. The user is allowed to log-in, thus causing the IST Applet to load before the driver. In this case, the Applet continues to check for the driver to be loaded every second until an Applet specific time-out occurs. This timeout is the number of seconds described by the registry value AppletTimeout. If this occurs, previous versions of the Applet did not correctly read the settings of the user BIOS preferences and set the system to Maximum Performance (MP). - The InstallShield installation package will now uninstall any previously installed version of the Intel SpeedStep technology Applet automatically and silently before installing this version. - In this document, The SMI command interface calls have been renamed from SpeedStep to the Intel SpeedStep technology acronym "IST". The operation of the SMI calls remains the same. For example, GetSpeedStepStatus is now GetISTStatus. This naming convention reflects the naming convention for the SMI command interface in the BIOS Writer's Guide. HOW TO USE: 1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive. The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above. 2. Double click to execute the Softpaq file. 3. Press the spacebar to continue with the setup. NOTE: Once you confirm the directory where the files will be extracted to, the SETUP.EXE program should run automatically, installing the software. 4. If you do NOT want to continue with the installtion, choose "Exit" 5. If you would like to create a diskette, you can run the MAKEDISK.bat program. 6. If it does not run automatically, run SETUP.EXE. For example, enter: \SETUP where is the drive and directory created in step 2 - or - a diskette drive letter if using the optional installation diskette Follow the on-screen instructions. 7. After the installation is completed, you may delete the directory created in step 2 if you wish. Copyright 2001, Compaq Computer Corporation. All rights reserved.
