The BIOS interfaces directly with the hardware of the system. ENHANCEMENTS/FIXES: - Resolves potential CRC errors during reads to the hard drive that could cause the computer to stop responding. HOW TO USE IMPORTANT: This upgrade only works when booted from a DOS diskette. It will not work when run from a protected mode DOS prompt. The update will only be performed on Device 0 / Primary Controller. No other drives in the system will be updated. 1. Ensure that the computer is powered by AC and not by battery. 2. Obtain a formatted 1.44-MB bootable diskette. 3. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is an executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above. 4. From that drive and directory, execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. Put the BOOTABLE diskette in a diskette drive and run the makedisk.bat file to copy the necessary files from the hard drive to the diskette. 5. After the diskette has been created, you may delete the SoftPaq file downloaded in step 2. 6. Boot the computer with the boot diskette created above. 7. At the command prompt, type UPGRADE. 8. Follow the on-screen instructions. The program will terminate upon completion of upgrade. You must then remove the diskette and turn the computer off and then on again before the upgrade will be in effect. If CRC errors persist after the firmware upgrade, contact Compaq technical support.
