Last Modified on February 27, 2002 Welcome to Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch and Compaq StorageWorks Command Console (SWCC). Thank you for choosing our products. This file contains a description of the contents of the Compaq StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN Switch Software CD, including the names of the files that contain release notes for the SWCC client and management agent. This file also contains late breaking changes to the CD that may not be included in the printed documents. Fabric OS 2.6 The Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switches come with version 2.6 preinstalled firmware. This firmware supports the following Compaq embedded software features that are enabled by a preinstalled software key: WebTools, Zoning. Make sure you copy down and save the keys in case they are deleted by accident. The Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switches with version 2.6 firmware supports the following Compaq optional software features that are enabled by an optional software key: QuickLoop/Fabric Assist, Extended Fabric and Fabric Watch. Additional features of firmware version 2.6 include: Support for large Storage Area Networks (SANs). Please refer to the appropriate application notes for specific supported configurations: http://www.compaq.com/products/storageworks/raidstorage/RAIDUser_docs.html Fixes to problems with configuring large SANs with the Graphical User Interface. The name service query time-out was extended to 1 second. The extension of this time-out from 120 ms enable name service query's for large SANs to complete. A NS time out will cause the name service to return an incomplete list of devices. A change was made to no longer send PDISK to a single ALPA on a single port on the switch. This change eliminates a problem where FLOGI was successful and PLOGI messages would continue. Active Zone Configuration Warning: Web Tools now issues a warning before disabling an active zone configuration. This lowers the risk that a Zoned Fabric may become un-zoned. A "Confirm Zone Delete" window appears confirming deletion of a zone. The window also notifies the user that the specified zone member will be removed from corresponding configurations. The user should click "Yes" to continue, and "No" to cancel the zone delete. Fabric Assist Mode Zones: Fabric Assist zoning now supports the ability to assign Arbitrated Loop Physical Addresses (ALPAs) to the targets zoned with private initiators which require a fixed ALPA for specific services such as booting. For more information see fazoneCreate command. fazoneCreate command: This Telnet command has been modified to accept a preferred ALPA value that may be assigned to the targets that are zoned with the private initiator. Loop Port Control (LPC): Loop Port Control (LPC) is an Extended Link Service that provides a mechanism to an N*_Port to request and an FL_Port transmit the LPB or LPE primitive sequence on a remote arbitrated loop. There are now two ALPA bitmaps; one bitmap of devices to bypass and another bitmap of devices to enable. Switch Names: Switch names can now begin with a numeric character. portCfgFAport command: A new Telnet command (portCfgFAport) that enables a user to lock a port as a Fabric Assist Host port. LoopPortTest command: A new Telnet command (loopPortTest) that verifies the intended functional operation of the switch. portCfgLPort command: This Telnet command has been modified to allow the user the option to lock a port as a Public L_Port. A fix to a problem with loops on the SAN switches where certain AL_PAs on a loop become inaccessible. User interface features provided by v2.6: Provides the new user interface for managing switches. Features include: graphical user interface pages for fabric discovery, zoning, name server, port enables, firmware downloads, switch administration, user administration, software readable serial number, SNMP administration, license administration, and other features for managing switches in a fabric. Management of optional licensed features is also included for managing remote switches. Supports both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator Browsers. All commands are not case sensitive. For example, instead of entering "fabricShow", you can enter "fabricshow". The v2.6 firmware will be available on the Compaq website at: http://www.compaq.com/products/storageworks/hubs-and-bridges/firmwareupdate.html The Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switches ship with the latest version of the firmware installed. A copy of the latest version of the firmware, v2.6, is also contained on this CD. Firmware v2.6 contains fully supported WEB tools (easy to use graphical user interface). Instructions for downloading v2.6 into a switch and the required loaders are also contained on the Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch Software CD. Please note that v2.6 firmware is for The Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switches only. V2.6 will not work if loaded into the 1 Gigabit Compaq StorageWorks switches (DS-DSGGA-AA Part Number 380591-B21) and (DS-DSGGA-AB part Number 380578-B21). COMPATIBILITY V2.6 firmware running in the 1 Gigabit Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switches is compatible with the Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch software version 2.1.9m for 1 Gigabit Switches. The old 1 Gigabit Compaq StorageWorks Fibre Channel Switch running software (Version 1.6d) is NOT supported with Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switches in a SAN with 2 Gigabit switches. When using HP-UX Quick Loop configurations, switch firmware version 2.6.0b must be used. This is a special release of the Version 2.6.0 firmware, available from the Compaq website, that correctly handles switch-based Quick Loop functionality. The 2.6.0b is only required on switches running quick loop. Version 2.6.0 and 2.6.0b may be mixed in the same SAN, but both switches on the loop must be running v2.6.0b. Compatibility with SANworks Data Replication Manager (DRM) V2.6 firmware supports SANworks Data Replication Manager (DRM) by Compaq in all configurations except... 1) DRM solutions using the Novell operating system are not currently supported by V2.6 firmware, and will require the use of earlier firmware versions. Please reference the DRM software support matrix for the latest information on Novell. This matrix can be found at http://www.compaq.com/products/sanworks/drm/softwaresupport.html. 2) V2.6 firmware supports DRM using Fiber Channel optical links. It does not currently support some DRM configurations using FC-IP or FC-ATM links, and will require the use of earlier firmware versions. For the latest update on supported DRM configurations please refer to the DRM "Application Notes" for inter-site links http://www.compaq.com/products/sanworks/drm/documentation.html. CASCADING Up to 7 hops are supported, where a hop is defined as a connection from one switch to another. Connections should be made such that traffic from an NL_Port will not transverse more than 7 hops when traveling through the cascaded switches. When cascading switches, sequentially assign domain addresses to the switches prior to connecting them to other switches in a SAN. When connecting a powered-down switch to a SAN that is running, the SAN will automatically assign a domain number to the switch when it is powered up. A new configuration file save command is provided that can be used to save the current configuration and load it into a new switch prior to adding it to the fabric. When connecting a SAN to a switch that is already powered up, the switch will not join the SAN if there are duplicate domain numbers. Refer to the Compaq StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN Switch Management Guide for more on compatibility mode and zoning that can also prevent switches from connecting to a SAN. RELEASE MIB FILES V2.6 The Management Information Base files are used for SNMP management applications such as Compaq Insight Manager and other SNMP management tools. The release MIB Files for Version 2.6 are as follows: v2_6FA.mib (Management Information Base for Fabric Alliance) 11/10/99 v2_6FE.mib (Management Information Base for fabric) 07/10/98 v2_6SW.mib (Management Information Base for switch) 12/15/01 v2_6TRP.mib (Management Information Base for traps) 03/16/01 The above MIB files can be copied from the Compaq CD in the DSGGD/ firmware subdirectory. Some management applications require you to change the filename extension to "txt" and may require you to delete the underscore between the 2 and the 6. Other non-switch specific Standard MIB files may be required to run an SNMP application and can be obtained from various sites on the internet including the American National Standards Institute. SAN MANAGEMENT STATION MEMORY REQUIREMENTS (WEB TOOLS) Number of Switches Minimum Memory Requirement 1-4 64 MB 5-9 96 MB 10-20 128 MB 21 or more 256 MB USING THE JAVA PLUG-IN The proper execution of the Web Management Tools v2.6 application requires that the Java Plug-In is installed on your management station. Web Management Tools v2.6 requires a Java Plug-In version based on Java 1.2 (also known as Java 2) to operate correctly. The Java Plug-In is similar to other plug-ins used on your browser such as Real Audio, Adobe Acrobat, and Macromedia Director. Once Java Plug-In is installed, its use is invisible. Microsoft Windows requires Java Plug-In 1.3.1_01 and Compaq Tru64 UNIX and Solaris requires 1.2. This version of the plug-in is also required for the Compaq SAN Appliance and the Network View Client that manages the Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switches. This version of the plug-in is also used to run Fabric Manager version 1. The Java plug-in can be loaded from the Compaq CD ROM included with the product. The plug-in is located in the FIRMWARE subdirectory. Double- click on the DSGGB/FIRMWARE IS j2re-1_3_1_01-win.exe file to begin the installation on an NT station. ACROBAT The documentation for Compaq StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN Switches and SWCC are present on the CD in PDF format. These documents can be opened using the Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can easily view and print one page at a time, or the entire user document. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is available for installation from the Compaq StorageWorks Fibre Channel Storage Switch Software CD in the ACROBAT directory. DISABLE RLS PROBING When RLS Probing is enabled the switch port will issue RLS Extended Link service to attached devices every four seconds to collect link status data. Otherwise, RLS will not be sent to the devices. RLS Probing is disabled by default ( Disable RLS probing "1") ETHERNET LINK MODE This command sets the Ethernet speed and is similar to the Telnet command "ifmodeset." The parameters are auto, 10H, 100H, 100F where H=Half duplex and F=Full duplex. It is recommended that you set the speed to match the speed of the management station Ethernet Adapter. Set the speed with the ifmodeset command. SUPPRESS CLASS F TRAFFIC Suppress Class F Traffic suppresses class F traffic for remote switch configuration. The parameters are "0" for off and "1" for on. LICENSES The table below lists the license key translations. The display format follows this format, but the information is presented in hex format, for example; 01B (hex) = 27 (decimal) which translates into Web+Zoning+QL+Fabric=1+2+8+16=27. License Decimal Hex WEB_LICENSE 1 1 ZONING_LICENSE 2 2 SES_LICENSE 4 4 QL_LICENSE 8 8 FABRIC_LICENSE 16 10 REMOTE_FABRIC 64 40 EXTEND_FABRIC 128 80 ENTRY_FABRIC 256 100 CONFIGUPLOAD TELNET COMMAND The Configupload command saves the switch configuration to a host. The saved Configuration information includes zoning and Fabric Watch settings. The configupload command does not save any Fabric Watch parameters that have a value of 0. This means that if you set any Fabric Watch Parameters to 0 and then do a configupload command and then change the parameter value to something other than 0, you will not be able to restore it to 0 by performing a configdownload into the switch of the file you saved. An FTP server must be installed and running when performing the Telnet command "configupload" on a Windows NT or 2000 system. If you do not have a Microsoft NT or 2000 FTP server previously installed on your system, you need to install it to use this command. Perform the following steps to install and configure a Windows NT or Windows 2000 FTP server. 1. Create a folder to hold the switch firmware and configuration files. 2. Install the Windows NT or 2000 FTP server on your system from your Windows installation CD. If you only use the FTP server for the firmware and configuration loads, you can specify the folder created in Step 1 as the FTP Publish Directory. 3. Open the Internet Service Manager Tool. 4. Perform a configuration save by using the Telnet command configUpload. FTP Service uses the standard users defined under Windows NT, so a valid local user and password is required. A user can be created using the Windows NT administrative tools. Appropriate permissions for the created folder (NTFS volumes only) must be setup to allow the user to have read and write privileges. CONFIGDOWNLOAD The Compaq default settings specify a Fabric Watch minimum performance level of the Eports so until transfers are taking place between storage and servers that pass over ISLs the switch will be red. The CONFIGDOWNLOAD command can be used to load a file previously saved using the CONFIGUPLOAD command. The Fabric Watch Version 2.6 manual incorrectly states that the Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch Software 2.6 CD includes Fw.SW6400.fabric.profile, fw.backbone.errlog, and compaqprofile.txt. NAME configDownload - download the switch configuration from a host file SYNOPSIS configDownload [host, user, file [,passwd]] AVAILABILITY admin DESCRIPTION This command downloads the switch configuration from a host file. The configuration file may have been generated previously using configUpload, or may have been created by a user to download only specific configuration changes. See "configUpload" for a description of the configuration file format. The download process uses either FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or the RSHD protocol (TCP service 514). Both of these services are widely available on Unix hosts, but less so on Windows hosts. On Windows NT, the FTP server may have to be installed from the distribution media and enabled, or on Windows NT or Windows 9x there are several good freeware and shareware FTP servers available. To use RSHD on Windows NT or 9x, two utilities are supplied, RSHD.EXE and CAT.EXE, together with instructions on how to install and run them. The FTP server or RSHD must be running before a download can occur. The command may be invoked without any parameters, in which case the user is prompted for input, including choice or FTP or RSHD. If invoked with three parameters RSHD is used, otherwise presence of the fourth parameter (FTP password) selects FTP. The download may fail for many reasons: - the host name is not known to the switch; - the host IP address can't be contacted; - the user doesn't have permission on the host; - the user runs a script that prints something at login; - the file doesn't exist on the host; - the file is not a switch configuration file; - the RSHD or FTP server isn't running on the host; - the configuration data contains errors. Note: the switch's identity cannot be changed by configDownload. Parameters such as the switch's name and IP address are ignored. They are the lines in the configuration file which begin "boot". Note: a licenseKey is only accepted if the boot.mac line matches the WorldWide Name of the switch performing the download, otherwise it is ignored. Note: the download process is additive, i.e. the lines read from the file are added to the current switch configuration. It is therefore possible to change a single configuration variable by downloading a file with a single line. All other variables remain unchanged. This is particularly important to understand when downloading a zoning configuration. Since the new zoning information is added to the current configuration there may not be any conflicts. If the current zoning configuration is to be replaced, then the key word "clear:" may be inserted into the configuration file immediately before the zoning lines. OPERANDS The following operands are optional: host A host name or IP address in quotes, e.g. "citadel" or "192.168.1.48". The configuration file is downloaded from this host. user A user name in quotes, e.g. "jdoe". This user name is used to gain access to the host. file A file name in quotes, e.g. "config.txt". Absolute path names may be specified using forward slash "/". Relative path names look for the file in the user's home directory on Unix hosts, and in the directory where the FTP or RSHD server is running on Windows hosts. passwd If present, selects FTP. EXAMPLE To download a configuration file from host "citadel", using account "jdoe", and file "config.txt": sw5:admin> configDownload "citadel","jdoe","config.txt" Committing configuration...done. download complete WEB MANAGEMENT TOOLS Netscape 4.6 (IRIX) fails to load Switch Manager.html (core dump of Netscape or SwitchApplet cannot start error). When using Internet Explorer version 5.0 or lower, scrolling error may occur. Internet Explorer version 5.01 or higher is recommended. When using an Internet Explorer or Netscape browser, for the SUN plug-in to work correctly you must type backslash after the URL (for example http://192.168.60.45/). SWCC Storage Works Command Console has the capability to log SNMP trap information (error and status events) occurring on the switch into the Windows NT application Event log. To enable this capability, the following parameters must be set on the switch: swEventTrapLevel:(0..5) - must be set for a severity level from 0 to 5. 0 - none 1 - critical 2 - error 3 - warning 4 - informational 5 - debug Note: Additional information is provided in the Compaq StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN Switch Management Guide. authTrapsEnabled: (true, t, false, f) must be set to "true" or "t" to enable sending of traps. Note: This parameter is set to "true" or "t" by default. These parameters can be set by using the switch Telnet interface along with the agtcfgSet Telnet command. Note that the switch will send one copy of a trap message to each IP address that is listed in the communities. If you enter the same IP address into all of the communities, you will get as multiple copies of the same trap message. SWITCH OPERATING SYSTEM During a telnet session with a Fibre Channel SAN Switch from a Compaq Tru64 UNIX or Open VMS machine, the Backspace, Delete, and Left Arrow keys do not work properly. The keyboards shipped with these machines produce a "question mark" character instead of deleting characters when using the Backspace key. It is necessary to type Control+H to delete characters. Use the backspace command to change the backspace character. backSpace, without any parameters, returns the current state of the parameter. backSpace 1 sets the backspace character in the switch to the Delete character. backSpace 0 sets the Backspace character to Backspace (Control + H). This makes the delete key work on Tru64 UNIX and Open VMS machines. New Compaq StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN Switches are configured with a default IP address of 10.77.77.77. This IP address may not be compatible with your configuration. The IP address can be changed by the following methods. One method is using the serial connection on those switches that have a serial connection. The IP address is not required to connect to a switch using the serial connection. Once the serial line is connected use the ipAddrSet to change the default IP address to the IP address that is suitable for your configuration. See the Users Guide for the respective switch for additional information. Connect the serial line to the serial connector on the switch to change the IP address to an address specified by your network administrator. An other method to change the IP address is to use the default IP address and an Ethernet connection to the switch. Once the Ethernet is connected to the switch, use the ipAddrset command to change the IP address. You have to set up a computer with an address on the same subnet to do this. Note: When using a serial port connection, the flow control must be set to None with 9600 baud. Note: There is an issue when updating the switch firmware to v2.6 using Web Tools. An error is reported by the GUI and then Web Tools will not respond. The firmware will have loaded correctly on the switch. You will need to reboot the switch using the telnet command reboot, to complete the firmware download procedure. When using Telnet commands for the firmware update, no errors are reported. The release notes are separated into two types of files: one specific to the Command Console Client and the other to the Fibre Channel Switch. The following tells you how the information is divided between these two types of files: * Command Console Client (ccclient.txt) - This file covers software information relating to the Command Console Client. It includes last minute notes specific to the Command Console Client version swcc.exe 2.2.0.213 * Fibre Channel Interconnect (fcinter.txt) - This document covers the release notes for the Fibre Channel Interconnect Agent and Client. It includes last-minute information on installation and troubleshooting, in addition to last minute notes that were too late for the Getting Started guide. * Setup Command Console (Setup.exe) If you double click on this program for NT it will setup the Command Console and ask you if you want to set up the respective interconnect agents and clients to manage Compaq Fibre Channel Switches. New and old Compaq Fibre Channel Switches can be managed using SWCC. SWCC PROBLEMS: Fabric Window hangs, after the Switch is disconnected from the network. When rebooting a switch, or disconnecting it from the network, sometimes the Fabric window hangs after the status warning appears. If this occurs, restarting the SWCC SAN agent will clear the problem. SWCC/GettingStarted.pdf 1. The instructions for deleting and renaming the Fabrics and Elements do not include the step of selecting the Fabric or Element, which will be deleted prior performing step number 2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUPPORTED CONFIGURATIONS Please refer to the appropriate application notes for specific supported configurations: http://www.compaq.com/products/storageworks/raidstorage/RAIDUser_docs.html It is recommended that all switches in a SAN be updated to the latest firmware. When the Compaq StorageWorks SAN switch firmware is upgraded to v 2.6, the minimum supported firmware level for the StorageWorks™ Enterprise Virtual Array (Enterprise) is VCS v1.02. The upgrade of the Enterprise storage subsystem firmware must be performed before the upgrade of the switch firmware. Please consult the Enterprise Virtual Array technical documentation for specific information for upgrading VCS firmware. If a configdefault command is issued to a switch, it will reset all switch settings to the default values except for the “route.delayReroute” parameter. If you use the configdefault command, you must reset the “route.delayReroute” parameter. The Compaq default value is route.delayReroute: 1 The iodset command can be used to set the route.delayReroute: parameter to a 1. it4:admin> iodset Committing configuration...done. The iodshow command can also be used to examine the state of the route.delay Reroute parameter. it4:admin> iodshow IOD is set The command configshow can also be used to examine the state of the route.delay Reroute parameter. route.delayReroute: 1 CABLES: Optical Cables for the Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch must be ordered separately. The cables that are 500 meters or less should be multi-mode Fibre Channel Cables. The cables that are longer than 500 meters should be single-mode. Multi-mode optical cables are connected to short wave GBICs in the Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch. Single-mode optical cables are connected to long wave GBICs in the Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch. Multi-mode cables should use 50/125 optical fibers, SC Duplex connectors with a PC finish. See Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch Users Guide for cable Part Numbers. Use of 62.5/125 should be restricted to situations where 62.5/125 optical fiber was previously installed and the link lengths are to be kept shorter than 200 meters. Single mode cables typically use 9/125 optical fibers for distances up to 10Km. Special GBICs are available for driving cables longer than 10Km. Contact your Compaq Sales Representative for more information. Gigabit Interface Converters (GBICs): Multi-mode GBICs for the Compaq StorageWorks SAN Switch must be ordered separately.
