SOFTPAQ NUMBER: N/A PART NUMBER: FILE NAME: cpqhealth-1.0.0-6.ia64.rpm TITLE: Compaq Health and Wellness Driver and the Compaq Integrated for Intel Itanium based systems Management Log (IML) Viewer Application for Linux VERSION: 1.0.0-6 LANGUAGE: English CATEGORY: Software Solutions DIVISIONS: Enterprise Servers PRODUCTS AFFECTED: ProLiant DL590/64 OPERATING SYSTEM: RedHat 7.2 IA64 SuSE SLES 7 IA64 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: All shipping configurations PREREQUISITES: 1. The kernel source for the current running system linked to "/lib/modules/'uname -r'/build". 2. The "gcc" version >= 2.96 package is also needed to build the kernel dependent piece. 3. The "tcl", "tk", and "tclx" packages will be needed for the IML viewer to work properly. EFFECTIVE DATE: March 28, 2002 ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION ALLOWED: Yes SOFTPAQ UTILITY VERSION: N/A SUPERSEDES: DESCRIPTION: This RPM is used to provide health management capabilities for supported IA64 Linux distributions installed on supported server systems. Enhancements: - Provides the Compaq Health and Wellness Driver which monitors operational data of the server and logs abnormal conditions. - Provides the Compaq IML Viewer Application which allows monitoring and manipulation of logged system events, critical errors, power-on messages, memory errors, and any catastrophic hardware or software errors that typically cause a system to fail. HOW TO USE: 1. Login as the system administrator (root), download the RPM to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. 2. If a previous version of the Health Driver has been installed, it must be removed before the current version can be installed. Any packages dependent on the Health Driver must also be removed. To check which version of the Health Driver (if any) is on the system, type rpm -q cpqhealth The rpm -q command may also be used to check for the existence of dependent packages. The dependent packages must be removed before removing cpqhealth. To remove the Health Driver, type rpm -e cpqhealth 3. Verify that the current running kernel source is installed on the system and that "/lib/modules/'uname -r'/build" is linked to it. This driver package is designed such that it builds the driver during the install. That way if a customer wished to use their own custom kernel(at their own risk of course) the driver will be built for that custom kernel. If the kernel is changed, cpqhealth will have to be removed and reinstalled. 4. To install the driver and the IML Viewer application, type rpm -ivh cpqhealth-1.0.0-5.ia64.rpm 5. The driver will be disabled by default. See the README in /lib/modules/Compaq/cpqhealth for configuration information to enable and start the driver. 6. Once the driver is enabled and start, To check whether the driver is loaded properly, type lsmod An entry indicating that driver "cpqhealth" was inserted should be visible. 6. If the RPM is installed on an unsupported system, an error message will be displayed. The driver will not be operational and should be uninstalled. Running the driver: 1) Once enabled and started correctly, the driver will be automatically loaded every time the server boots. 2) Additional information and help is available by typing man cpqhealth Uninstalling the driver: 1) Uninstall using RPM by typing rpm -e cpqhealth If the health driver is running, it will be shut down. Should you reboot the system, the health driver will NOT be loaded at boot time. The IML Viewer Application will also be uninstalled. 2) If you ever wish to unload the driver, simply type rmmod cpqhealth The running driver will be removed from memory. Should an error condition occur, the driver will log an entry to the system log and to the health log as well as to the (text) console. In case of emergency, the health driver will attempt to shut down the system gracefully. Running the IML Viewer Application (requires X-Windows): 1) The IML Viewer is an application that runs in the X-Windows environment. Execute the following command to start the IML Viewer: cpqimlview The Compaq Integrated Management Log Viewer automatically displays the current entries of the Integrated Management Log. Additional information about features, installation, use, and troubleshooting the Compaq Health and Wellness Driver and the Compaq Integrated Management Log Viewer is available in the How-To document LinuxHealth-Itanium.pdf, available at http://www.compaq.com/products/servers/linux/.
