TITLE: ------ Steps to install and upgrade UnitedLinux 1.0 SP2a (2.4.19-333) On The ProLiant ML330 G3 ATA Server. ============================================================================== DESCRIPTION: ------------ Specific steps are required in order to install UnitedLinux 1.0 Service Pack 2a (and then upgrade to the 2.4.19-333 errata kernel) on the ProLiant ML330 G3 ATA server. Note: These steps apply only to UnitedLinux 1.0 SP2a on the ProLiant ML330 G3 ATA server. Note: UnitedLinux 1.0 = Conectiva Linux Enterprise Edition, SCO Linux 4.0, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 and Turbolinux 8 all powered by UnitedLinux 1.0 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DETAILS: ------- The following steps are to be used to install UnitedLinux 1.0 base kernel on the ProLiant ML330 G3 ATA server: 1) Locate the LSI CSB6 driver for UnitedLinux 1.0 for the ProLiant ML330 G3 ATA server in this "tar" bundle. The latest version of the driver is bundled into lsi_csb6_UL10-2.50d-1.tar.gz - Un-tar and unzip the "tar" bundle. On a Linux system, you could also use the following command to do so: # tar -xvzf [filename].tar.gz - Create a diskette from the ".dd" file that results from the action above, and label it "LSI CSB6 driver diskette" . On a Linux system, use the following command: # dd if=./[filename].dd of=/dev/fd0 bs=18k - To create a diskette from an ".img" or ".dd" file on a Windows system, use RAWRITE which can be located on the distribution CD-ROM 1. 2) Boot the ProLiant ML330 G3 ATA server from CD-ROM 1 of the base UnitedLinux 1.0 installation media (not CD-ROM 1 of SP2a). When the Linux "boot" screen is displayed, press the left ALT key to supply the driver diskette. Insert the "LSI CSB6 driver diskette" in the diskette drive and type the following boot options: hde=noprobe hdf=noprobe hdg=noprobe hdh=noprobe acpi=off Note: The boot options need to be provided to prevent the "hd[X]: lost interrupt" messages during the installation. The source for these messages is the native CSB6 IDE driver in Linux kernel itself. This driver loads irrespective of the subsystem vendor id/device id and attempts to access drives connected to CSB6 channels. Because the hard drives are already configured for RAID devices, the native IDE driver will fail to get proper interrupts. This will result in the hd[X] lost interrupt messages. Later, the LSI CBS6 (MegaIDE) driver removes the native driver and takes over all resources. In addition, if attempting to proceed to install the LSI CSB6 driver rpm for the 2.4.18-333 errata kernel (instructions given below) the boot options "hde=noprobe hdf=noprobe hdg=noprobe hdh=noprobe" will be added for each LILO/GRUB entry to prevent the native CSB6 driver from detecting the MegaIDE devices. 3) Proceed with the installation and complete the necessary steps to install the UnitedLinux 1.0 (base kernel) operating system on the ATA hard drive(s). The following steps are to be used to upgrade both UnitedLinux 1.0 (to SP2a and then to errata kernel 2.4.19-333) and the LSI CSB6 driver on the ProLiant ML330 G3 ATA server: 1) Obtain the Service Pack 2a CD-ROM(s). 2) Obtain the 2.4.19-333 errata kernel RPM(s). Note: Obtain the errata kernel RPM(s) from the distribution vendor. Note: Do not reboot the server until Step 7. 3) Locate the LSI CSB6 driver RPM for UnitedLinux 1.0 for the ProLiant ML330 G3 ATA server in this "tar" bundle. This is the driver for the errata kernel 2.4.19-333. The latest version of the driver is called lsi_lsicsb6_UL10-2.50d-1.i386.rpm 4) Install SP2a. Note: One method is to use the "install.sh" script provided by UnitedLinux to install the SP2a errata kernel and other RPMs. 5) Install the 2.4.19-333 errata kernel, for example: # rpm -Uvh k_smp-2.4.19-333.i586.rpm Note: The appropriate kernel sources could be installed at this time. 6) Install the LSI CSB6 driver RPM for the 2.4.19-333 errata kernel: # rpm -ivh lsi_lsicsb6_UL10-2.50d-1.i386.rpm 7) Reboot the server. When the server is booting, choose the GRUB / LILO entry created when the LSI CSB6 driver RPM was installed, for example, HP-2.4.19-64GB-SMP.
