TITLE: Steps to install RedHat ES 2.1 / AS 2.1 on the ML330 G3 ATA. ================================================================================== DESCRIPTION: Given below are the steps to install Red Hat Enterprise Server 2.1 on the ML330 G3 ATA. To install Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1 follow the same steps but replace ES2.1 with AS2.1: 1. Create a “boot” diskette from the “boot.img” file in the “images” directory in CD1 of RH ES2.1 QU2 (Quarterly Update 2). Label the diskette “rh21 boot diskette”. • To create a diskette from the “.img” file, on a Linux system, use the following command: # dd if=./boot.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=18k NOTE: This is to solve a known issue with the driver disk images provided with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 Quarterly Update 2. Default Driver Disk image file is very big. Most of the system disk space during installation will be taken by the default driver images in the CD and installer will not get enough space to copy LSI CSB6 driver images. As a work around RedHat suggested to use boot floppy to boot from which uses a small driver disk image file 2. Obtain the LSI CSB6 driver specific to RH ES2.1 / AS2.1 for the ML330 G3 ATA from the HP Linux web site. The same driver works for both ES2.1 and AS2.1. The current driver is called: lsi_lsicsb6_RH2.1-e.24-v2.50d-1.dd.tgz: • The driver should be available under “Software – Driver Diskettes”. If the LSI CSB6 driver is in the “tgz” form, then un-tar and unzip it: # tar –xvzf .tgz • Create a diskette from the “.dd” file that results from the un-tar above, and label it “LSI CSB6 driver diskette” . On a Linux system, use the following command: # dd if=./.dd of=/dev/fd0 bs=18k • To create a diskette from an “.img” or “.dd” file on a Windows system, use RAWRITE which can be located on the distribution’s first CD. 3. Boot the ML330 G3 ATA from the “rh21 boot diskette”. When you reach the Linux “boot” prompt type in “linux dd” and hit “enter”: # boot: linux dd NOTE: Ensure there is no CD in the CD-ROM drive at this time. 4. You will be prompted for a driver diskette. Remove the “rh21 boot diskette” from the floppy drive and insert the “LSI CSB6 driver diskette”. Also, insert the Red Hat ES 2.1 QU2 CD 1 in the CDROM drive at this time. Proceed with the installation and complete the necessary steps to install the RH ES 2.1 operating system on your ATA hard drive(s). NOTE: You may notice “hdx: lost interrupt” messages during the install. The source for these messages is the native CSB6 IDE driver in Linux kernel itself. This driver loads irrespective of the subsystem vendor id/device id and tries to access drives connected to CSB6 channels. As the hard drives are already configured for RAID devices the native IDE driver will fail to get proper interrupts. This will result in the hdX lost interrupt messages.. Later, the LSI CBS6 (MegaIDE) driver removes the native driver and takes over all resources. SCOPE: Only in the following combination: Red Hat ES 2.1 / AS 2.1 on ProLiant ML 330 G3 ATA. RESOLUTION: Follow the steps listed under Description to install RH ES2.1 / AS2.1 on the ML330 G3 ATA. SERVICE ACTION: Perform the actions described in the Resolution.
