Thanks for all the suggestions folks - I got a tip from the Ubuntu mailing list with a link suggesting it is a limit of my HBA. So I have a buddy with a newer HBA that he is going to lend me next week just to see if it solves the problem. If so, I'll buy a few of those. Will keep you posted ...
