I don't know if that is a different password or not. I had the same
problem under Sol9 and figured out that SMC in Sol9 didn't understand
the password hash that I was using. (I changed tp MD5 from the default.)
I had to reset the password for root after setting the password
encryption back to standard UNIX type. Then I was able to use the root
password to access SMC.

I can look some of this up and find the actual file I changed (somewhere
in /etc) to change the password hash. Let me know if that might be
helpful. Might not be able to do that until tomorrow, though.
