Is there a ssh public/private key being used in this connection, or  
are you doing straight user passwords?

There's a incompatibility with commercial SSH Secure Shell-generated  
keys being used on a OpenSSH server. Who knows whose fault it is, but  
it's a known issue none the less. You can use OpenSSH's ssh-keygen  
utility to convert the commercial SSH Secure Shell-generated public  
key to something it'll work with. See the OpenSSH ssh-keygen man page  
for details on how to do that.
