Yes this is a good idea as well. I'll be running statspack snap shots which
should give me a good report on how the database did during this time.

It would be handy to have some way to verify sql response time without using
a human (those pesky humans can be very inacurate). Maybe you could scripta
query in a loop and output its response time somehow.
