Munish,

newfs -N will only return correct super-block numbers if all conditions are
exactly the same as when the filesystem was first created. Usually that
isn't the case, which means the super-blocks returned by newfs -N are
usually not correct for the filesystem. This is why it's smart to route the
super-block data to a file when the filesystem is first created. Then you
can save that file on another machine or on a backup media.

That said, if you haven't done so, try block 32. Along with the default
block 16, block 32 is always a super-block. This may not work, though,
because block 32 is physically close to block 16. Thus, if block 16 is
corrupt, it's quite possible that block 32 is also corrupt.

Good luck.

Subject: [SunHELP] Problems while fsck

Hi Listers,

I'm facing the following error while running a fsck to recover a damaged
file system.

root# fsck -F ufs -o b=92592 /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s6
Alternate super block location: 92592.
** /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s6
BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
USE AN ALTERNATE SUPER-BLOCK TO SUPPLY NEEDED INFORMATION;
eg. fsck [-F ufs] -o b=# [special ...]
where # is the alternate super block. SEE fsck_ufs(1M).

The error does not go even if i specify any other super-block number. I am
using newfs -N to get the alternate super-block number.

Please tell me what else can i do to solve this issue.

Thanks to all,

Regards
Munish Bajaj
