[SunHELP] Sol8 NIS Environment RPC Problems

I'm trying to setup from scratch a new NIS master server running Solaris 8.
Our old NIS master was running 2.6. The old server also had DNS service
running on it - the new server doesn't.

When we switch to the new server, on the 2.6 clients, users can log in and
mount their home directories. That bit works.

The problem we have is when a NIS user logs into a client server and tries
to run a perl ftp script command we get an error "FTP Initialisation Error:
Net::FTP: Cannot determine protocol". The user's home directory is
physically located on this client server. As far as I can see the ftp script
doesn't reference the NIS master in any way. You can log in as the user and
run normal ftp commands without any problems.

Just in case it mades any difference I added the location of the perl
libraries, etc to the user path - but it made no difference.

We also have some software (Exceed) so we can remotely run performance meter
on our PC's and keep an eye on things. When we switch to the new server, log
on and try to run these commands as a NIS user, this doesn't work.

So I think that we may have some sort of RPC problem... Have I overlooked
some sort of configuration issue on the master? Some security, services or
RPC setting somewhere? For now we have switched back to the original 2.6
master. Unfortunately our environment means that I have no real way to test
anything unless I make the server live (which means I have to get up at 5
o'clock in the morning so I can come in and reboot things!)....

Cheers,

Howard.
