[SunHELP] Newb question: can't install core group

Jeffrey J.Nonken jeff_work at nonken.net

I'm trying to set up an SS20 as a firewall. I'm a complete newb at this, I
have a smattering of knowledge of Unix, but this is a learning experience for
me.

I'm following the instructions on a web site. The first thing it wants is a
Solaris 8 installation with the core software group only.

Only I find I can't install the core software group. I've tried it with
Solaris 8 and 9, with and without a frame buffer (I tried it without the
frame
buffer in case having it present installed things that caused more
dependencies).

It's strange to me that the installation leads me to the point where I have 5
choices, but there's no way to use 3 of them? If I choose anything but

	1. Entire Group Plus OEM
	2. Entire Group

I get the error

The following product(s) require more system software than is
available in the Core Solaris Software Group:

Yet I don't really see where I can deslect those items elsewhere in the
install?

Here's the entire install dialogue from the last install (Solaris 8 w/o a
frame buffer). (Note that I'm setting it up to run as a workstation inside my
present network for the moment. And I just realized it doesn't see hme0 in
this installation... odd.)

The Installer prefers that the swap slice is at the beginning of the
disk. This will allow the most flexible filesystem partitioning later in the
ins
tallation.

Can the swap slice start at the beginning of the disk [y,n,?,q] y

You have selected the following to be used by the Solaris installer:

        Disk Slice : /dev/dsk/c0t3d0
        Size : 512 MB
        Start Cyl. : 0

WARNING: ALL INFORMATION ON THE DISK WILL BE ERASED!

Is this OK [y,n,?,q] y

The Solaris installer will use disk slice, /dev/dsk/c0t3d0s1.
After files are copied, the system will automatically reboot, and
installation will continue.

   Is this machine networked (y/n) [n]? y
Would you like to configure using DHCP [n]? n

Please enter a host name, which identifies this system on the network. The
name must be unique within the domain in which it resides; creating a
duplicate
host name will cause problems on the network after you install Solaris.

A host name must be at least two characters; it can contain letters, digits,
and minus signs (-).

   Enter host name []: eclipse

Please enter the Internet Protocol (IP) Address for this system. It must be
unique and follow your site's address conventions, or a system/network
failure
could result.

IP Addresses contain four sets of numbers separated by periods (for example
129.200.9.1).

   Enter this machine's IP Address []: 192.168.0.26

Please specify the netmask of your subnet. A default netmask is shown; do
not
accept the default unless you are sure it is correct for your subnet. A
netmask
must contain four sets of numbers separated by periods (for example
255.255.255.0).

   Enter the subnet netmask [255.255.255.0]:

Specify whether or not IPv6, the next generation Internet Protocol, will be
enabled on this machine. Enabling IPv6 will have no effect if this machine
is
not on a network that provides IPv6 service. IPv4 service will not be
affected
if IPv6 is enabled.

   Enable IPv6 [n]: n

Please provide name service information. Select the name service that will
be
used by this system, or None if your system will either, not use a name
service
at all, or if it will use a name service not listed here

Available name services:

1. NIS+
2. NIS
3. DNS
4. LDAP
5. None

Please enter the number corresponding to the type of name service you
would
   like [5]: 3

Please specify the domain where this system resides. Make sure you enter the
name correctly including capitalization and punctuation.

   Enter this system's domain name []: bellatlantic.net

Please enter the IP Address of your DNS server(s). You must enter at least
one
address. IP Addresses must contain four sets of numbers separated by periods
(for example 129.200.9.1).

Enter the first name servers IP Address (this is required) []: 192.168.0.1
Enter the second name servers IP Address, 'n' for none or 'e' to end this
   section of questions []: 151.197.0.37
Enter the third name servers IP Address, 'n' for none or 'e' to end this
   section of questions []: 151.197.0.38

Please enter a list of domains that will be searched when a DNS query is
made.
If you do not enter any domains, DNS will only search the DNS domain chosen
for
this system. The domains entered, when concatenated, may not be longer than
250
characters.

Enter the first search domain, 'n' for none or 'e' to end this section of
   questions []: e

The default route provides a bridge between two physical networks that
forwards
traffic between the networks.

You can let the software try to find one or you can specify one. The software
can find a default route only if the system is on a network that has a router
that broadcasts itself.

1. Find one
2. Specify one

Please enter the number corresponding to your router discovery method [1]:
2

On this screen you must enter the IP Address of the default route. IP
Addresses
must contain four sets of numbers separated by periods (example 192.168.0.1).

   Router Address []: 192.168.0.1

Please select how to specify your default time zone.

Specify Time Zone by:

1. Geographic region
2. Offset from GMT
3. Time zone file

Please enter the number corresponding to how you would like to specify the
   time zone [1]: 2

Please specify your default time zone as an offset from Greenwich Mean Time.
If you are east of Greenwich, England, specify a positive number 1 through
13;
if you are west of Greenwich, England, specify a negative number -12 through
-1.

Enter the offset from GMT, in hours [0]: -5

Accept the default date and time or enter new values.

The default date and time is Sunday January 12 22:31:20 GMT 2003
. Do you want to use this date and time (y/n) [y]? y

Type in an alphanumeric string to be used as the root password for the
computer
you are setting up.

   Enter the root password []:

Retype the above password for confirmation.

Enter the root password again []:
