Thanks for your quick reply James.

tried date -u as well but its the same.

tried correcting the syslogd message and agin tried restarting in.named now
i get the message-
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7396]: directory . is
world-writable
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7397]: Ready to answer queries.

What kind of problem is this?? Is it somewhere related to hardware? I have
no clue as to why is this happening??
Pls advise.

ello Sunmanagers,
We have Sun Ultra 5 machine with Sun OS2.7. We have the following services
running on it:
DNS (BIND-9.2.3) and NTP. The problem is that I am just not able to change
the clock on my sun machine.
#date
Sun Dec 31 05:30:02 IST 1967
#date 1126110503
Sun Dec 31 05:30:02 IST 1967

[James] Please refer to 'man date' for the correct usage of the date
command. In particular refer to the -u flag.

My cat /var/adm/messages gave the following output:
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7242]: deleting interface
[202.131.152.27].53
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7242]: not listening on any
interfaces
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in syslogd: /var/adm/utmp not owned by root
or not mode 644.
This file must be owned by root and not writable by
anyone other than root. This alert is being dropped because of
this problem.
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7243]: Ready to answer queries.
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7243]: dumping nameserver data
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7243]: finished dumping nameserver
data
Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7243]: query log on
Dec 31 05:30:00 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7250]: starting. in.named BIND
8.1.2 Tue Nov 10 18:16:24 PST 1998
Dec 31 05:30:00 dnsblr.estel.net.in Generic 107018-01-5.7-September 1998
Dec 31 05:30:00 dnsblr.estel.net.in named[7251]: Ready to answer queries.

Due to this my named services have also stopped working and its just not
resolving the names for the hosts.
So far i ahve not done anything, I dont know what to do? Can anyone pls help
em with this.

[James] Having a read through the messages is a good start. Note the lines:
"Dec 31 05:30:01 dnsblr.estel.net.in syslogd: /var/adm/utmp not owned by
root
or not mode 644.
This file must be owned by root and not writable by
anyone other than root. This alert is being dropped because of
this problem."

Perhaps if you correct this issue, you will get more alert information as
this warning/error message has advised you. When you have done this, review
the message log again. If you are still having problems then post the
appropriate information to the list in a mail with a descriptive subject.
