I think what he may run into is problems with some Gnu tarred files; I
run into that periodically with open source software

You can get a lot of good Gnu software from http://www.sunfreeware.com.
Try a mirror.

I do not think Nmap is on there. You can get wget from the site above,
as well as the gcc compiler, which you can then use to compile Nmpa
with. Do a man on 'pkgadd' to see how to add packages to Solaris.
