it isn't much of a guide, but if you don't mind soldering, here's how I do
it.
Buy blank DB9's and make them into those neat-o Cisco rj45-->DB9 adapters.
Then you can use straight-through ethernet cable to do terminal sessions.

Cisco CAT5 to DB9 serial adapter:

>From rear:  (side where wires connect to pins..)

(Blank)      (Yellow)     (Black)    (Orange)   (Green&Red)

         (Brown)         (Blue)      (White)       ( Blank)

FWIW the "blue" and "black" console cables that come with these adapters
are wired:
