As a followup:
When I put an IBM drive in and run format, I get the following:
Searching for disks...WARNING: /pci at 6,2000/scsi at 1/sd at 0,0 (sd30):
disk not responding to selection
WARNING: /pci at 6,2000/scsi at 1/sd at 0,0 (sd30):
disk not responding to selection
Which repeats a few times, then format shows the disk as:
6. c3t0d0 <drive type unknown>
/pci at 6,2000/scsi at 1,1/sd at 0,0
