There's really not a whole lot to discuss.  Your instructor got some bad
crack, that's all...

Also, consider that these chips are fairly fragile.  They're configured to
accept certain voltages on  certain pins, if that were switched around it
makes sense that you would fry the chip.  Would you turn a processor 180
degrees in its socket?

Take from the folks that probably did it once or twice by mistake - it
*will* fry your chip...
